Jockey Mario Gutierrez credits wife for keeping him in check

Mario Gutierrez

Jockey Mario Gutierrez rode Nyquist to victory at the Kentucky Derby on Saturday, marking his second time winning the race. Afterwards, the Mexican jockey gave plenty of thanks to his wife, whom he credited for keeping him in check.

“It was a different approach for me as the favorite (in the race),” said Gutierrez. “My wife keeps me in check the whole time, so I came into this prepared 100 percent.”

Then in his first interview immediately after the race, Gutierrez similarly credited his wife for inspiring him.

“I have to thank my wife more than anything. I wasn’t doing that great and she never stopped believing in me. She made me realize why I love riding so much. It’s unbelievable.”

She must be some special woman for keeping his confidence up like that. It all paid off on Saturday.
