If there's any consolation, the Phillies and Braves got 3.3 million viewers on EPSN2, a huge number for the deuce. The lady hoopsters averaged 2.5 million on the (appropriately nicknamed?) mothership ESPN. You can find all the numbers at www.tvbythenumbers.com.

My guess is that ESPN pushes women's hoops so hard to curry favor with the Title IX crowd in Washington, an even more important consideration now that Obama has taken over.

I am even more surprised at MLB in general. Isn't the opening game of the season supposed to be a huge deal? If so, why could I not find the game on TV anywhere....not on TBS, Fox, ESPN. Maybe ESPN was taking their cue from MLB.

If ESPN feels it must televise women's sports, then it should get the rights to golf, tennis or beach volleyball, plus gymnastics and diving, when a big event takes place.

To even suggest that womens' NCAA basketball is bigger than the mens' and womens' high level tennis tournaments at Indian Wells and Key Biscayne is lunacy. To give it priority over the MLB season opener is totally off the charts.

Someone should tell ESPN and the L.A. Times Kurt Streeter that if people don't want to attend or watch Womens College Basketball, nobody can stop them.
