Olympics set record by ordering 450,000 condoms for athletes

Safety-First

If you thought 150,000 condoms for the Olympic Village in London four years ago sounded a bit excessive, just wait until you hear the order that is being shipped to Rio.

The International Olympic Committee has ordered 450,000 for the Summer Games this year. As The Guardian notes, there are 10,500 athletes competing. If you break it down by averages, that means each athlete is being supplied with 42 condoms. Of those 450,000 prophylactics, 100,000 are female condoms, which have not been issued at past Olympics.

Any way you look at it, that’s a lot of raincoats.

“It is an absolutely huge allocation of condoms,” retired rowing gold medallist Zac Purchase told The Guardian. “But it is all so far from the truth of what it’s like to be in there. It’s not some sexualized cauldron of activity. We’re talking about athletes who are focused on producing the best performance of their lives.”

While the IOC has not cited Zika concerns as a reason so many condoms are being provided, the Australian team is supposedly bringing antiviral condoms for added protection.

Hey, you can never be too safe. One U.S. snowboarder described the Tinder app as being “next level” when she was in Sochi for the Winter Olympics two years ago. And remember what Hope Solo said about the sex and debauchery that goes on in the Olympic Village? It’s better to have more than enough.
