Laura Bassett own goal will likely haunt her forever (Video)
England lost its World Cup semi-final match against Japan on Wednesday in the most heartbreaking way possible, especially for 31-year-old Laura Bassett.
Bassett scored an own goal in the 92nd minute (stoppage time) that allowed Japan to take a 2-1 lead and punch their ticket to the World Cup final against the United States. Bassett actually made the right play on the ball, as she somehow managed to get her foot on a beautiful cross from Japan that may have resulted in a goal, anyway.
Right play or not, the ball couldn’t have come off Bassett’s foot any worse. The play is going to haunt her forever, even if she has received support from fans and players who have been in her situation:
Dear @laurabassett6 You've been amazing. UR fight&determination are your true character.I know the pain of an own goal but it won't define U

And if your name is Laura Bassett but you’re not the Laura Bassett who was in tears after Wednesday’s game, just ignore whatever tweets might come your way.
Guys I'm not Laura Bassett the soccer player. But feel free to continue tweeting at me it's kinda fun

Remember how gut-wrenching this goal was for Argentina in the Men’s World Cup final last year? Multiply that by about 1,000,000,000 and you still don’t know how terrible Bassett must be feeling.
