Russian Premier League soccer match stopped after fans invade field (Video)
Compared to the majority of the world, the United States still lags behind when it comes to passion for soccer. In some countries, it’s a religion and we’ve seen on numerous occasions what happens when overzealous fans take things too far.
On Sunday, we were provided yet another example during a Russian Premier League match between Zenit St. Petersburg and Dynamo Moscow.
With the game nearly complete, fans rushed the field causing the scene to turn ugly. At one point, a shirtless man swung at Dynamo team captain Vladimir Granat. According to BBC, Granat suffered a concussion as a result of the blow.
The Russian Football Union’s disciplinary committee will meet this week to determine any necessary punishment. Although it’s still four years away, Sunday’s incident doesn’t shed the best light on Russia considering it’s the chosen host nation for the World Cup in 2018.
