Sergio Romero stops Ron Vlaar, Wesley Sneijder in shootout to send Argentina to finals

Sergio RomeroArgentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero helped send his country to the finals of the World Cup by stopping the Netherlands’ Ron Vlaar and Wesley Sneijder in a shootout Wednesday.

Romero dived to his left to stop Vlaar on the Dutch’s first penalty kick, giving Argentina the advantage. He also stopped Sneijder on the Netherlands’ third penalty kick attempt to essentially ice things.

Argentina’s Maxi Rodriguez was the fourth player to attempt a penalty kick for his country and he converted, giving Argentina the 4-2 shootout win. Argentina made all four penalty kicks they attempted.

Netherlands manager Louis van Gaal will be questioned for having Jasper Cillessen stay in net for the shootout; they beat Costa Rica in a shootout after switching to Tim Krul, who saved two shots in the shootout Saturday.
