Rory McIlroy’s friend fills Claret Jug with Jagermeister

Rory-McIlroy-Jagermeister

Rory McIlroy said after winning the 2014 Open Championship on Sunday that he was going to follow in the footsteps of Phil Mickelson by filling the Claret Jug with some nice wine. Mickelson revelaed last week that he drank a $40,000 bottle of wine out of the trophy when he won the tournament in 2013, so that kind of set the standard. Phil mentioned nothing about Jagermeister.

We’re not sure if Rory followed through with the wine promise or not, but we do know that one of his buddies poured Jagermeister into the Claret Jug at one point while McIlroy’s mom watched. That was either before or after the whole gang posed for a photo.

As Eye on Golf pointed out, McIlroy also celebrated the big victory with fellow major winner Justin Rose.

Rory McIlroy’s dad Gerry to cash in on old British Open bet

rory-mcilroy-fatherRory McIlroy dominated the 2014 Open Championship from start to finish to capture the first Claret Jug trophy of his career. McIlroy was under par in each of his four rounds, finishing 17-under for the tournament with a final round 71 on Sunday.

McIlroy’s dad Gerry, who placed a bet along with his buddies that Rory will the British Open, will take home $171,000 after Rory’s victory on Sunday. Betting firm Ladbrokes has confirmed that one bet — which is believed to be the one Gerry made — was a 200-pound wager placed in 2004 that Rory would win the British Open within the next 10 years. The bet will pay 500:1.

This was the final year that Rory’s dad would have been able to cash in on the bet, which makes the story even more incredible. Two other bets, which were supposedly placed by Gerry’s friends, will also pay out a hefty sum. One wager was 200 pounds at 250:1 that McIlroy would win the Open by 2015 and another at 150:1 that he would do it before age 50. Those wagers are worth a combined $136,700.

“We take the chance on bets like these,” Ladbrokes’ Rachel Bridge told ESPN. “We can make a lot money, but it’s a big risk if one comes through. Unfortunately, on this one, we have egg on our face. Rory’s father and his friends are having champagne on us tonight.”

The victory leaves McIlroy one win away from completing the career grand slam. He won the PGA Championship in 2012 and US Open in 2011. McIlroy now has three major championships under his belt before his 26th birthday.

McIlroy was only the seventh player in the 143-year history of the Open Championship to lead the tournament from the opening round through the finish. No other player even tied him at any point after the first round was in the books.

The 25-year-old Northern Irishman has come out firing at a number of tournaments this year only to implode in the second round. That was not the case at Royal Liverpool as he matched his first round score with a 66 in Round 2 on Friday.

And for those of you who are interested, here is the lucky lady that might be dating Rory.

John Daly’s pants have strippers on them

John-Daly-stripper-pants

John Daly has always worn whatever he wants whenever he wants, and the 2014 Open Championship was no exception. Daly fired a 77 in the opening round at Royal Liverpool on Thursday, but he did it with style as usual. This time, Daly had scantily-clad women on his pants.

As Will Brinson mentioned, the ladies look an awful lot like strippers. They’re definitely wearing lingerie, so you can classify them any way you want. Here is a closer look:

You might remember Daly making a fashion statement with his pants earlier this year at the Qatar Masters, only he kept it much more G-rated during that tournament. It doesn’t matter what Daly shoots or how poorly he plays, he is and always will be the best.

Ernie Els three-putts from two feet for triple bogey (Video)

Ernie-Els-puttErnie Els started the British Open with a triple-bogey on Thursday, and it could have easily been avoided if he wasn’t so careless. Els, a 44-year-old veteran who has won 19 times on the PGA Tour, somehow putted three times from inside two feet.

Els had to work hard to put himself in position for a tap-in bogey after hitting a spectator with his tee shot. The fan was bleeding from the mouth, so it’s unclear if that rattled Els. Whatever the case, he missed his two-foot bogey putt and then tried to carelessly knock the double-bogey in with the back of his putter. He missed that, too.

The series was extremely difficult to watch, and it could end up costing Els down the road. While it’s only Thursday, you have to limit mistakes in order to remain in the hunt at the British Open. Els made two brutal ones in a span of a few seconds.

Henrik Stenson snaps club over his leg (Video)

Henrik-Stenson-snaps-clubWe saw some players shoot low scores in the opening round of the British Open on Thursday, but there was still plenty of the standard frustration we have grown used to seeing at Scottish links style courses. Henrik Stenson went into the 17th hole at 1-over on the day, and he finished the 17th with one less club in his bag.

Stenson hit a poor tee shot with a wedge and was not pleased about it. When his caddie reached out to take the club from him, Stenson snapped it over his knee and handed it over in two pieces.

Stenson also broke his driver in frustration during a tournament last season, so he is known for having a bit of a temper on the course. Charl Schwartzel also snapped a club during last year’s British Open. No tournament tests a player’s patience more than The Open.

Tiger Woods yells ‘Jesus Christ!’ at British Open (Video)

Tiger-swearsTiger Woods became frustrated with the photographers lining the 18th hole during the first round of the British Open on Thursday. As Woods was looking to hit his second shot on the par 5, he was distracted by people who were taking pictures. He had to back off of the shot twice.

Tiger was mid-swing the second time he was distracted and stopped at the last second. He shouted out “Jesus Christ!” and the ESPN cameras picked it up perfectly.

The British Open is one of the most difficult tournaments in golf, and it can really frustrate the players. You might remember Tiger cussing up a storm after missing a putt at the same event a few years back. Henrik Stenson also broke a club over his leg on Thursday, so you get the point. It will be a long enough weekend for some guys without having to be distracted by fidgety fans.

Tiger Woods British Open drive hits someone in face (Video)

Tiger-Woods-driveTiger Woods played extremely well in the opening round of British Open on Thursday, especially when you consider that he has been out with a back injury for most of the season. Woods was 3-under for the day heading into the 17th hole. His drive on 17 was a bit off line, and a course marshall paid the price.

Tiger’s tee shot took a high bounce and hit the unsuspecting gentleman right in the face. Fortunately, it appeared he was OK.

Given some of the high grass that lines the fairways at Royal Liverpool, that guy’s face may have actually saved Tiger some trouble. He went on to make par on the 17th.
