Aldon Smith reportedly will not play for 49ers next season

Aldon Smith 49ersAldon Smith is awaiting a hearing relating to his arrest at LAX over the weekend and the San Francisco 49ers are so frustrated with him, they may not have him on the team next season.

San Jose Mercury News columnist Tim Kawakami says that after speaking to several sources within the organization, he does not think Smith will play for the team this season.

Kawakami says everyone in the organization is embarrassed over Smith’s behavior, which includes DUI arrests in 2012 and 2013, and felony weapons charges relating to an incident at a 2012 party, in addition to the airport arrest. He says there is “weariness and frustration” unlike any other he has seen before.

Smith’s arrest is the latest negative incident involving a 49ers player this offseason. Colin Kaepernick has been mentioned in connection with a potential sexual assault case, while Chris Culliver was arrested for an alleged hit and run incident late last month. The team supposedly supports Kaepernick and is not planning to release Culliver, but their feelings are different with Smith.

Kawakami says the Niners likely will wait through the legal and NFL process before making any decision on Smith, who will likely be disciplined by the league for his off-field problems.

San Francisco owes Smiths over $3 million guaranteed and have a May 3 deadline to pick up his $9.75 million option for 2015. Smith has recorded 42 sacks since being drafted in 2011.

Police: Aldon Smith ‘appeared as if he had been drinking’

Aldon Smith mug shotSan Francisco 49ers defensive star Aldon Smith was detained at Los Angeles International Airport on Sunday after he allegedly yelled “bomb” in a terminal. He was booked into Los Angeles jail on false report of a bomb threat.

According to CSNBayArea.com’s Matt Maiocco, LAX Police Sgt. Karla Ortiz said Smith was not administered a blood-alcohol test because his arrest was not alcohol related. However, she said Smith appeared to have been drinking at some point during the day.

“He was not what we considered to be intoxicated, but he appeared as if he had been drinking earlier in the day,” Ortiz explained.

The police may not have been concerned about whether Smith was drinking or not, but the 49ers should be. Smith took a voluntary leave of absence last year to enter rehab for his substance abuse issues after he was arrested on suspicion of DUI and possession of pills and marijuana. Given his laundry list of off-the-field issues, I’m sure the Niners would prefer that Smith not drink at all.

As for the arrest, it was initially reported that Smith was randomly selected for a secondary screening while going through airport security. Ortiz later added that the 24-year-old was going through the screening when he asked if he would be searched further. He was told that would not be necessary and allegedly gave the following response.

“Why not? I have a bomb.”

Niners general manager Trent Baalke released a statement on Smith’s arrest Sunday evening.

“We are disappointed to learn of the incident today involving Aldon Smith,” Baalke said. “As this is a pending legal matter and we are still gathering the pertinent facts, we will have no further comment.”

How many strikes does this guy get? The 49ers have done all they can to keep Smith, who is one of the premier pass rushers in the game, but their hands may finally be tied. It’s going to reflect poorly on the organization if they keep letting him get away with stuff.

Aldon Smith detained at airport, allegedly yelled bomb in terminal

Aldon Smith mug shotSan Francisco 49ers premier pass rusher Aldon Smith was reportedly detained at Los Angeles International Airport Sunday after allegedly yelling “bomb” in a terminal.

Smith’s name has not yet been released, but an LAPD spokesman confirmed someone was arrested and being transported to booking. The LAPD issued this statement to the San Jose Mercury News about the incident. They say Smith was randomly selected for secondary screening and became upset.

“The suspect then became belligerent and uncooperative with the process and with the TSA agent, making a comment indicating that he was in possession of a bomb before proceeding towards the gate area.

“Los Angeles Airport Police made contact with him at the gate and he was positively identified as the person in question. Once again the male subject became uncooperative and he was detained and taken into custody by Airport Police and is currently being transported to LAPD for booking.”

An eyewitness told the San Jose Mercury News that Smith was at Gate 6 of Terminal 1 when confronted by several police, who then led him away from the Southwest gate.

Smith was described as “agitated” over the situation and supposedly said he was doing nothing wrong.

Smith took a leave of absence from the 49ers last season to enter rehab after a DUI where he had marijuana and pills in his car.

Aldon Smith kicks Robert Griffin III in nuts, gets away with it (GIF)

Aldon Smith kicked Robert Griffin III in the nuts during the third quarter of Monday’s San Francisco 49ers-Washington Redskins game, and he was lucky he got away with it.

Washington had a 2nd-and-7 early in the third quarter from the San Francisco 46 and went with a pass play. Griffin threw to the far sideline for Josh Morgan, but the pass was ruled incomplete. At the end of the play, after RG3 had already released the ball, Smith, who was an arm’s length away from Griffin, raised his leg and connected with the quarterback’s groin.

He must have a wide foot because he got both of them:

Aldon Smith activated by 49ers from NFI list

Aldon Smith 49ersThe San Francisco 49ers announced on Thursday that they have activated Aldon Smith from the NFI list.

Smith has been away from the team since their Week 3 loss to the Indianapolis Colts. He was in rehab receiving treatment following a DUI arrest on the Friday morning before the Week 3 game against Indy. During the DUI arrest, Smith was found to have marijuana in his possession in addition to being drunk.

49ers GM Trent Baalke said last week that the team hoped to have Smith back after the bye week. They are currently on their bye after beating the Jacksonville Jaguars in London on Sunday. They return to the field on Nov. 10 at home against the Carolina Panthers. He will have missed a month and a half of action while receiving treatment.

San Francisco 49ers hope Aldon Smith will return after bye

Aldon Smith 49ersA month has passed since Aldon Smith left the San Francisco 49ers to enter rehab following a DUI arrest, and the team is still hoping to have him back after the bye week.

The 5-2 49ers face the Jacksonville Jaguars this week in London and then go on their bye week. Six weeks will have passed when the team returns for their Week 10 game the Carolina Panthers. Will that be long enough for Smith to return to the team? GM Trent Baalke answered that question for 49ers reporters on Thursday.

“Our ultimate goal hasn’t changed: help Aldon get back to a place he feels very comfortable and move forward in a very positive manner,” Baalke said via the San Jose Mercury News. “We’re obviously hopeful (for a return after the bye). At the same time, we’re prepared for either outcome.

“It’s like anything, you’re developing that trust factor again. We all understand, including Aldon, that situations like this have to be in the past.”

I really think this could go either way. Six weeks is a long time to be in rehab and away from the team, and keep in mind an initial report said he could miss five weeks. He probably would only need a week of practice to get back in shape to play. I wouldn’t be pushing for a return earlier than necessary, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Smith returned in Week 10.

Aldon Smith had enough weapons to form a small militia

Aldon Smith mug shotSan Francisco 49ers linebacker Aldon Smith is facing three felony weapons assault charges that stem from a house party he hosted during the summer of 2012 where one person was allegedly stabbed and two others were shot. Police who responded to Smith’s house found a number of assault rifles and ammunition. According to NBC Bay Area, the Santa Clara County District Attorney is expecting Smith to “self-surrender” to the weapons charges later this month.

So what exactly did the 24-year-old have stashed in his house? Enough weapons to form a small militia would be the simplest answer we can give. Prosecutors say Smith had not registered any of the weapons that were found in his home. For those of you who are more visual, let’s get a better understanding of the guns he had.
