Bernard Hopkins Still Motivated by His Critics Entering Fight with Jean Pascal

Bernard Hopkins turns 46 years old in January and is the challenger in his December 18th fight with Jean Pascal on Showtime. Pascal is the WBO and IBC light heavyweight champion who gained his IBC belt beating Chad Dawson in August. At 28 years old, the French Canadian has age on his side in his bout with Hopkins.

The age difference doesn’t bother Hopkins who stays motivated by his critics. Speaking prior to his upcoming fight, Hopkins reflected telling the media “my life has been about proving people wrong. I thank you all for giving me the push that I desperately needed for my career.” Hopkins infamously spent five years in prison but went on to a successful boxing career afterwards, using his doubters as motivation.

Hopkins has a chance to make history by winning the fight. With a victory, he will become the oldest champion surpassing George Foreman who was also 45 when he beat Michael Moorer in 1994. Does being so old make Bernard a fan favorite? Not in his eyes — he says he thinks people 40 years and up are rooting for him but other people want him to lose because they want him out of boxing. Because he’s still effective at his age, Hopkins can probably relate to men like Joe Paterno whom people tried to force out, saying “nobody should be asked to leave his job before he is physically and mentally ready.”

Kelly Pavlik Comes Off as Poor Sport, Drops S-Bomb in Interview

I already expressed how surprised I was to see Bernard Hopkins administer such a butt whopping on Kelly Pavlik. Hopkins seems to be using his strong performance as a spring board for more fights in the future. And from the sounds of things according to Pavlik, weight seemed to be his biggest issue, though he doesn’t directly admit it. Check out this post-fight interview where Pavlik comes off as a poor sport. Ear muff it too in the beginning if you want to avoid the profanity.

Just saying “it wasn’t him” and that he wasn’t tired is hard to believe for anyone who watched the fight. It’s not that he’s that good? He lost to Jermain Taylor twice? OK, so where were you then? Boxing doesn’t exactly seem to me like pitching where sometimes you have your stuff and sometimes you don’t. Either you can beat someone or you don’t — simple as that.

Bernard Hopkins Proves at 43 He Can Still Beat a White Boy Like Kelly Pavlik

It was just six months ago that Bernard Hopkins was forced to eat his words upon losing to Joe Calzaghe. Hopkins declared pre-fight that he would never let a white boy beat him. Then he went out and lost the fight. Half a year later he was the underdog by most accounts in a fight with the much younger Kelly Pavlik. Funny thing happened though: Hopkins destroyed Pavlik. The Old Man dominated the fight in Atlantic City from the start and it could be argued he never even lost a round. Already well past 40, Hopkins says he might be approaching Evander Old Field territory:

Bernard Hopkins Beaten by ‘White Boy’

It really didn’t get much attention when Hopkins made his initial comment, and it certainly slipped by our pages here. But in case you missed it, light heavyweight boxer Bernard Hopkins said prior to his fight with super middleweight Joe Calzaghe from Wales, “I would never let a white boy beat me. I couldn’t go back to the projects if I let a white boy beat me.” Well fight night has come and gone, and low and behold, Bernard Hopkins finds himself on the losing end of a decision. Despite knocking Calzaghe down in the 1st round, Hopkins wound up losing on two judges’ cards (116-111 and 115-112) but winning on the third (114-113). As Dan Rafael already wrote, Hopkins must now eat his words. Thing is Bernard feels wronged by the decision:

Nobody Wants Their Ass Kicked by a Senior Citizen

That apparently is one of Bernard Hopkins’ mottos. He’s 42-years-old and proud. In the reality of today’s sports, he’s one year younger than Vinny Testaverde, two years younger than Roger Clemens, almost three years younger than Evander Holyfield, and six years younger than Julio Franco. Dude’s practically a spring chicken. But in the following video that was passed along to me to promote the upcoming Hopkins/Winky Wright fight on Saturday, it shows the manlove between Bernard and UFC champ Randy Couture who’s 44-years-old. The video — “Bernard Hopkins is…The Bionic Man”

Dude, if that doesn’t send you memories of Ivan Drago, then I don’t know what does. Well, except for all the muscles…and steroids (so far that we know of).
