Scared of LB? Challenge Match with Bethanie Mattek-Sands Postponed by Injury

It is with much sadness that I inform you my scheduled challenge match with tennis player Bethanie Mattek-Sands has been postponed. In case you’re not up-to-speed with the story, Mattek-Sands was upset with my criticism of her during Wimbledon. The 30th ranked woman in the world flagged me down on twitter and challenged me to a tennis match, saying “put up or shut up.” You can read about the entire story here.

We had planned to play next week at the Mercury Insurance Open in Carlsbad, California, but that has been postponed. Bethanie’s shoulder, which has been bothering her the past few months, began acting up again during practice this week. She decided not to play in the Carlsbad tournament but she plans to play in Toronto and Cincinnati before heading to the U.S. Open.

The news of her injury comes as a great disappointment. I’ve spent the past month training for the match, practicing my game and working on my cardio. I was in tip-top shape and my skills were sharp, so the time off is going to be a killer.

So what happens now?

I’ll be waiting to hear from Bethanie about a better time to play the match. She is working on plans to run a tennis camp in Arizona in December. She may also run a camp in California in November. If she’s able to organize one in California, that would be an excellent opportunity to make it happen.

So yes, I’m every bit as disappointed by this as you are. We’ll keep you updated over the next few months to let you know when it will happen, and rest assured I’ll be ready to kick some butt.

Oh yeah, also take a listen to my interview with Marcas and Cacique from New Era Radio. My segment starts at the midway point and we talk mostly baseball.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands Challenges Hating Blogger to Tennis Match: ‘Put up or Shut up!’

Bethanie Mattek-Sands has challenged a blogger to a tennis match over his criticism of her in recent weeks. That blogger would be me, Larry Brown.

Bethanie must have come across this post and this post I wrote about her last week and tracked me down on twitter to let me hear about it. The challenge was issued immediately.

“Since you manage to talk some smack how about we get you out on the court during the US Open series!?! Put up or shut up RIGHT???” she wrote in a twitter message to me.

Naturally I was taken aback, but I told her I was in Los Angeles and that we could meet at the WTA event in Carlsbad (San Diego area) to get it on. She wrote back saying “Ill even spot you a few games maybe even a set?? You even think you could take a game off me!?!?”

At that point I told her she wouldn’t win more than three points against me if we played a set, and that made her even more eager to play. “Oh this is tooooo much, please have as many fans and or media there as possible in Carlsbad. This will be EPIC!” Mattek-Sands wrote.

I wasn’t messing around either. If she goes to the Carlsbad tournament, you better believe I’ll be there for a challenge match. The only issue is actually getting her to come out for the event.

“I’m gonna have to get the wild card for the tournament now as I was not gonna play it, but now I have a reason to start earlier!” she said.

All Bethanie needs to know is I’ve already begun training in preparation for the challenge. Now she just needs to take her own advice and “put up or shut up!” because I’ll be there and I’ll be ready.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands Snubbed Chair Umpire After Wimbledon Loss (Video)

Not only did Bethanie Mattek-Sands lose in the first round at Wimbledon this week, while sporting a Lady Gaga-style outfit and eye black, but she also snubbed the chair umpire on her way off the court:

The standard post-match protocol is to shake hands with your opponent and then shake hands with the chair umpire. Mattek-Sands was upset her last shot was called out by the umpire and snubbed her. Rather than being upset with calls, she should be more upset with herself for the way she played. Focus on your game Bethanie, and you won’t have to worry about umpire’s calls.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands Wears Eye Black at Wimbledon, Loses Match

American tennis player Bethanie Mattek-Sands caught our attention when she sported a Lady Gaga-like dress to the Wimbledon player’s party last week. Mattek-Sands likes to make a fashion statement on the court and admitted that high socks is her current style. She wore the high socks for her first round match at Wimbledon Wednesday, along with another Lady Gaga-style jacket. That’s all fine and well, but then she topped it off with eye black from one of her new sponsors:

Eye black is designed to help keep the glare out of athletes’ eyes. Considering it’s been in the 50s, cloudy, and rainy at Wimbledon, the eye black is pretty pointless and quite obviously just a fashion statement. What are we getting at? It’s one thing if you’re wearing crazy outfits like Venus Williams or Maria Sharapova and actually winning majors, but it’s quite another if you’re getting bounced in the first round. A word of advice to Bethanie Mattek-Sands: fashion statements are best reserved for players who are actually winning. Until you can win a match at a grand slam, worry less about your outfits and more about your opponents.

Bethanie Mattek-Sands Wears Lady Gaga Style Dress (Pictures)

Anytime you ask Lady Gaga’s designer to make you something, things are bound to get weird. For that reason, it’s safe to say American tennis player Bethanie Mattek-Sands knew what she was getting herself into at Thursday night’s Wimbledon player’s party. As you can see to the right, Mattek-Sands showed up in a ridiculous looking “dress” with pieces of tennis balls attached to it.

Gaga’s designer, Alex Noble, came up with the idea for the dress which Mattek-Sands called “the funky dress I wanted.” I’m still having trouble deciding which is dumber: the dress itself with the tennis ball chunks all over it or the mohawkish hat.

Could this be a challenge for Venus Williams? If she wants to dethrone Venus as the queen of fashion weirdness, Mattek-Sands will have to sport something crazy on the court like Williams has with this outfit or this dress.  It would also help if she draws attention to herself by making it look like she isn’t wearing any underwear.  Here are some more pictures of Bethanie Mattek-Sands’ Lady Gaga dress courtesy of Busted Racquet:
