Caroline Wozniacki ‘shocked’ by way Rory McIlroy broke up with her

Caroline Wozniacki confirmed the long reported truth about her breakup with Rory McIlroy: it came in the form of a phone call from her ex-boyfriend and left her in shock.

Woz talked about her May breakup with McIlroy in an interview with Yahoo Sports’ Graham Bensinger.

“Oh, I was shocked,” Wozniacki said of the phone call breakup. “I thought at least I would get a face-to-face or something, but there was nothing. It was just a phone call and I did not hear from him again. It was kind of like that. Just kind of ended. I think I was just in a shocked phase after that.”

Despite the public embarrassment from the breakup — which came after the two had already sent out wedding invitations — Wozniacki doesn’t appear to have any regrets.

“That’s a chapter in my life I’ve learned a lot from it,” Wozniacki told Bensinger. “I definitely learned a lot about myself, about relationships. I’ve learned you have to take life as it goes. … I’ve moved on.”

And for the remaining single men who have interest in her, Wozniacki shared what she looks for in a guy.

“I look for someone who’s honest, who’s fun to be around, who doesn’t take himself too seriously.”

She also got in a little zinger on Rory.

“I would like a taller guy so I can wear my heels.”

Ouch. That’s the second time now that Woz has taken a shot at Rory’s height since their breakup. I think she’s hit her max.

Though painful, the breakup was probably for the best. Both athletes have been performing extremely well since the relationship ended.

Caroline Wozniacki and Serena Williams partied together after US Open finals

Caroline Wozniacki Serena Williams

Caroline Wozniacki said after losing to Serena Williams in the finals of the US Open Sunday that drinks that night were on Williams. Apparently she wasn’t joking.

As we saw on social media, Woz and Serena went partying together Sunday despite Serena hammering Woz 6-3, 6-3 in the finals.

The two shared pictures on Instagram from their night out together:

Even Joe Jonas of Jonas Brothers fame got in on the fun (he attended the match earlier in the day):

Woz and Serena have been friends for years and Williams was there to help her pal after she was dumped by golfer Rory McIlroy in May. Their friendship obviously extends well beyond the courts.

Even though some people will see this as harmless, I do question how much of a killer instinct Woz has in her matches against Serena knowing that she likes her so much. Then again, I could probably question how much of a killer instinct Woz has in most of her matches anyway …

Serena Williams wins record $4 million payout at US Open

Serena WilliamsSerena Williams took home the biggest single payday in tennis history Sunday after beating Caroline Wozniacki in the finals of the US Open.

Williams destroyed Woz, her good friend, in straight sets 6-3, 6-3 to capture her sixth US Open title and 18th overall grand slam. She also took home $4 million thanks to the win.

The prize money for winning the US Open is $3 million. The other million came from Serena winning a $1 million bonus as the Emirates Airline US Open Series Champion.

Serena clinched the US Open series in August after beating Woz in three sets in the semis of the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati. It was her third time winning the US Open Series in the last four years.

The $4 million payout from the USTA eclipses the previous record of $3.6 million, which she held with Rafael Nadal. Her career earnings are estimated to be around $57 million, which is the most in women’s tennis history.

Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki friends off the court

Serena Williams and Caroline Wozniacki may have to be opponents on the court, but the surprise is that they are actually friends off of it. And the world learned about the relationship a few months ago.

Wozniacki was feeling pretty miserably after being dumped by ex-boyfriend Rory McIlroy in May. And guess who was there to help get her mind right afterwards? None other than Serena.

Both players lost early at the French Open this year and decided to spend some time together. They went to South Florida and hung out on the beach. They even took in the NBA playoffs and watched the Miami Heat play, where the now prescient photo seen above was taken.

Serena also shared many more photos on Instagram of the two of them together during their mini-vacation:

Caroline Wozniacki and ex-boyfriend Rory McIlroy dominating since breakup

Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy dated for three years and were engaged to be married before calling things off in May. And by calling things off, we mean McIlroy dumped Caro over the phone.

But it turns out their breakup may have been for the best; ever since the two broke up, their athletic careers have taken off.

Woz and McIlroy first began dating around July 2011. They got engaged on New Year’s 2014 and broke up in May. Despite facing criticism that their relationship was negatively affecting them in their respective sports, they remained strong with their love for each other. But now we’re seeing definitive proof that they are much better without each other.

Prior to them dating, Wozniacki had reached the finals and semifinals of the US Open, the semis of the Australian, and the quarters at the French. A few months after they began dating, Woz made the semis of the US Open and quarters at the Australian in 2012 before falling apart. She never got past the fourth round of a grand slam while dating McIlroy (after the Australian in 2012). That span included two first-round and two second-round exits. She also lost in the first round of the French right after Rory broke up with her.

But once she got her head straight, Woz got right back on track.

She reached the fourth round of Wimbledon for the first time since before she began dating Rory. She won her first title of the year right afterwards when she captured the Istanbul Cup. She reached the quarters of the Rogers Cup and semis of the Western & Southern Open in her next two tournaments. And then she reached the finals of the US Open for the second time in her career.

Likewise, McIlroy has kicked it into high gear since the two broke up.

McIlroy won two majors after the breakup and took home the title at the WGC-Bridgestone Invitational. He won the PGA Championship for the second time and the British Open for the first time. The win at the PGA Championship was extremely telling; it was his first win on either the PGA or European Tour in 18 months, and it came immediately after he called off the wedding.

Woz and McIlroy were very much in love and seemed to enjoy their time together, so nobody can say they regret the relationship. But what we’ve seen is definitive proof that they’re both better at their sport when they’re not together and able to focus more on training, practicing and their athletic careers.

Caroline Wozniacki made it very difficult to have a “long hair, don’t care” outlook on Wednesday when her tennis racket got stuck in her hair during her match against Alaiksandra Sasnovich.

Wozniacki missed a return when her hair got tangled in the racket as she was going for a backhand. Despite losing the point, she beat Sasnovich 6-3, 6-4 to advance to the third round of the US Open.

Since Woz won, we can all laugh about the unfortunate and unlikely turn of events. Imagine if her own hair caused her to lose a match? Now that would have been a story.

Rory McIlroy says split with girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki has helped his game

Rory McIlroy Caroline WozniackiRory McIlroy has regained his status as the No. 1 golfer in the world during his incredible run over the past few weeks. McIlroy has a chance to win his third tournament in a row and second-straight major at the PGA Championship on Sunday. Did breaking up with Caroline Wozniacki allow McIlroy to rediscover his game?

The 25-year-old believes calling off his engagement has helped his swing.

“I think what happened has been for the better in terms of my golf,” McIlroy told reporters over the weekend, via the Daily Mail. “I’ve put a bit more time into it and it has refocused me. I mean, what else do I have to do now? I go to the golf course, I go to the gym and it’s just my life at the minute.

“I worked pretty hard before but the past couple of months I’ve really just buried myself in my game. It obviously works pretty well, so I am going to have to keep doing it.”

The results speak for themselves, though I doubt McIlroy would have called off his engagement just days after sending out wedding invitations just because of golf. He didn’t dump Woz for golf, but it was obviously a consideration.

Meanwhile, a certain ex-girlfriend recently started following McIlroy on Twitter again. Maybe one of our all-time favorite golf WAGs had some advice for Rory.
