Rockets will reportedly let Chandler Parsons become restricted free agent

Chandler ParsonsThe Houston Rockets will reportedly decline the fourth-year option on Chandler Parsons’ contract, making him a restricted free agent this summer. While it may seem bizarre that the team would choose not to pay a player like Parsons $960,000 for the final year of his deal, there are a number of factors at play for the Rockets.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Rockets are determined to clear as much cap space as they can so they can pursue a third max-contract free agent to join Dwight Howard and James Harden. Targets could include Carmelo Anthony, LeBron James and Chris Bosh. The possibility of a sign-and-trade for Kevin Love also exists.

If the Rockets ultimately plan to keep Parsons, this could allow them to sign him to a more team-friendly long-term deal than they would have gotten if he became an unrestricted free agent after the 2014-2015 season. This way, Parsons may be more excited — for lack of a better term — about negotiating since he will be earning far more money in 2014-2015 than he would have if Houston picked up his option.

Parsons averaged 16.6 points and 5.5 rebounds per game this past season. He has improved dramatically in each of his first three NBA seasons, and he’ll likely command a contract with an average annual value of more than $10 million. Should the Rockets decide he is worth that much money to them, they can match any offer that comes his way. This gives them more leverage and a better chance to keep him long-term.

Chandler Parsons got in car accident; woman who hit him wanted autograph

Chandler ParsonsChandler Parsons was able to play on Monday night despite recovering from minor injuries he suffered last week and getting into a car accident on his way to the game. The Houston Rockets forward, who ended up scoring 21 points and grabbing seven rebounds in a win over the San Antonio Spurs, was reportedly struck by a woman who ran a red light.

Parsons told Jonathan Feigen of the Houston Chronicle that the collision happened outside the Toyota Center. He also said the woman asked for a souvenir.

“She said she ran a red light and it was her fault,” Parsons explained. “She had a little car so it kind of messed up the front bumper of my car. She was OK. Asked me to sign her insurance card.”

The woman was apparently not rattled to the point where she didn’t know who Chandler Parsons is, so she must be a pretty big Rockets fan. It takes guts to ask for someone’s autograph after running a red light and crashing into them. I can’t figure out if I respect that move or not. Yeah, I think it’s a power move.

Mike Dunleavy bloodied by Chandler Parsons’ elbow; comes back to light it up (Video)

Chicago Bulls forward Mike Dunleavy took a brutal elbow to the head from Chandler Parsons during the second quarter of his team’s win over the Houston Rockets on Thursday night. Parsons was called for a charge on the play, but Dunleavy more than paid the price. He was forced to leave the game and needed 10 stitches to close the wound over his right eye.

At first, Dunleavy’s return was announced as questionable. Not only did he re-enter the game in the third quarter, the 33-year-old veteran lit up the scoreboard and put together one of the best halves of basketball of his career.

After getting bandaged up, Dunleavy went on to score all of his team-high 21 points in the second half. He scored 18 points alone in the third quarter, which was more than the entire Rockets team combined (16). He finshed 4-for-6 from beyond the arc and added seven rebounds.

It was an incredibly gutsy performance and one of the best games of Dunleavy’s career. No word yet on whether or not DeMarcus Cousins was impressed.

Chandler Parsons shaves head to support young fan with cancer

Houston Rockets forward Chandler Parsons use to have a great head of man hair. Some would call Parsons, who recently modeled in a commercial for the Buffalo David Bitton clothing line, a pretty boy. Heck, the former Florida star even gels his hair up during games. But on Christmas Eve, Parsons decided there were far more important things in life than his hair.

Parsons shaved his head to support his friend Patrick Hobbs-DeClaire, a 10-year-old who has been battling cancer. Patrick is a twin, and his father said he is more afraid of not looking like his twin brother than he is of the cancer itself.

“His dad was telling me how he isn’t even scared of death,” Parsons said, via the Houston Chronicle. “He is more worried about not looking like his twin brother anymore, so me being his favorite player, I decided to shave my head to look more like him and hopefully give him some support and encouragement from me.”

Parsons did not inform Hobbs-DeClaire that he was going to shave his head, but he told his family to tune into the Rockets Christmas Day game against the San Antonio Spurs. He’s hoping it will be a nice Christmas surprise. Bravo, Chandler.

Chandler Parsons and girlfriend Robyn Crowley celebrate his birthday together

Chandler-Parsons-Robyn-CrowleyHouston Rockets forward Chandler Parsons turned 25 last week, and he celebrated with some teammates and friends over the weekend. More importantly, he shared the special occasion with his girlfriend Robyn Crowley.

TMZ posted some photos of Parsons’ birthday weekend in Houston that included teammates James Harden, Dwight Howard and Jeremy Lin. However, we’ll operate under the assumption that Crowley is going to be the one that catches your eye if you scroll through the pictures. We don’t blame you.

If Crowley’s Instagram page is any indication, she and Parsons have been dating for well over a year. The former Florida star has clearly done as well for himself off the court as he has on it — if not better.

Chandler Parsons could not attend a girl’s prom, so he got her a party bus instead

Chandler ParsonsChandler Parsons was unable to attend the prom of one of his fans, but he still did his best to make the young girl’s day.

A girl named Stephanie Flores, who appears to be a huge Houston sports fan, tweeted to the Rockets forward on May 20 to ask him to her prom.

Flores then enlisted her friends to bombard Parsons with tweets on her behalf to ensure he would see the prom request.

After at least 15 of her friends sent tweets to the second-year player, she got a response:

Chandler Parsons leaves fan hanging with a fist pound (Video)

Chandler-Parsons-fist-poundChandler Parsons was one of the biggest reasons the Houston Rockets were able to avoid a sweep on Monday night. The 24-year-old dropped 27 points to go along with 10 rebounds and eight assists. Parsons helped lead a 13-0 run in the third quarter of a game in which the Oklahoma City Thunder led by 13 near the end of the first half.

The Rockets snuck away with a 105-103 victory and live to play another day. After the game, a fan who was sitting courtside wanted to celebrate with Parsons by going in for a fist bump. As you can see from the video above, Parsons stonewalled the dude. If I’m not mistaken, it appears he intentionally made him think he was going to pound fists and then casually walked away. Here it is in GIF form, courtesy of Ben Golliver:
