Cutler Curse? Kristin Cavallari Voted Off Dancing with the Stars

Typically we don’t concern ourselves with the outcome of Dancing With the Stars. Quite frankly, we really don’t care how a sports figure dances, unless it’s in the end zone. But this week we actually have a reason to write about an occurrence on the show because it fits in with a theme we’ve been covering.

Last week, we told you that Jay Cutler and Kristin Cavallari may be back on after calling off their engagement in July. Cutler’s former tight end with the Broncos, Tony Scheffler, was even angling for Jay to support Kristin as a member of the audience. The quarterback obliged.

Jay was in the audience for Kristin’s routine Monday, supporting his ex (current?) girlfriend. Naturally, as we learned via Marc Kohn on Twitter, Cavallari was voted off the show Tuesday (not that we were watching). It would be easy to blame this one on Jay Cutler, so we will. Everything the guy seems to touch falls apart. But the best line comes from Stephen Douglas at The Big Lead, who blames middle America for voting off Kristin. “Your jealousy is worse than your cheese breath,” he says. The prosecution rests.

Chad Ochocinco’s Relationship with Cheryl Burke Ruins His Dating Show

Bengals wide receiver Chad Ochocinco (he does still play football, doesn’t he?) planned one of the busiest off-seasons we’ve seen for an athlete lately. Ocho booked himself a spot on Dancing with the Stars (angering me in the process) and landed a dating show on VH1 where 85 women vie for his love. While Chad probably figured that he had struck gold with his dual shows, he admitted the dating show — Ochocinco: The Ultimate Catch (or Perfect Catch, I’ve heard both) — has unfortunate timing because of his interest in his dancing partner, Cheryl Burke.

Chad and Cheryl have apparently become quite affectionate towards each other and Ocho even bought her a $10,000 diamond ring. The two have denied that they are dating but Chad is making it seem like he’s not interested in anyone else. Here’s what he said on Live with Regis and Kelly when asked about his new dating show:

Unfortunately, this was already in place before I did Dancing with the Stars, before I met Cheryl. If I wasn’t doing that, she would have probably been the one.”

Not that I would ever watch such pointless drivel, but I have to imagine that this is the last thing the producers at VH1 wanted to hear. They gave Chad his reality show thinking he would play the role of the ultimate bachelor. What good is his dating show if he’s already taken? The two probably are dating but they just can’t reveal it otherwise it would officially make the dating show a sham. I’m just hoping his new lady, whether it’s Cheryl or some VH1 skank, has a Kate Hudson-like effect on him.

Erin Andrews: Dancing with the Stars Is a Demanding Schedule

A few years ago we had the pleasure of interviewing Dancing with the Stars pro Karina Smirnoff whose partner at the time was Floyd Mayweather Jr. Karina’s off the show this season but her words from two years ago are still applicable; Karina said she and her partners spent 8-10 hours a day practicing. That’s quite a commitment, but it doesn’t even encompass all the responsibilities for each contestant according to season 10 competitor Erin Andrews. In an interview with Jimmy Traina of SI’s Extra Mustard, Andrews explained the demands of the DWTS schedule:

SI.com: What’s the typical day for you like with the show?

Andrews: Usually, you do press starting at 5:30-6:30 in the morning and that goes for three or four hours. Then I record an interview for DWTS. Then I have an hour before I have to be at the studio and then I’m at the dance studio for six or seven hours.

Considering the payoff in terms of popularity gained and the corresponding earning potential increase each participant receives from appearing on the show, I’m not about to lend some sympathy here. My point is that based on Andrews’ depiction of the typical show day, Chad Ochocinco might be completely burnt out when it comes time for the season to begin. Yeah I know he’s a busy dude with all his ventures away from the field, but damn, this takes it a to a new level. At first I was worried about the lack of priority Chad’s decision showed. Now I’m just worried that his legs will be done by training camp.

Chad Ochocinco Joins Dancing with the Stars, Shows Priorities

I’m an admitted Bengals fan who has defended Chad Ochocinco time and time again. The whack job has been my favorite player and the last jersey I bought but now he’s officially lost me. The news that Chad Ochocinco will be a contestant on the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars means Ocho won’t be concentrating on football in the offseason for the second time in three years.

I don’t know too much about Dancing with the Stars, but from what I understand, at worst his participation should take up the entire month of March. At best, and judging by his dancing skills with the river dance, Ocho could last as long as 10 weeks. That’s correct — his commitment to participate on the TV show could take up all his attention for the next three months. While I still feel that Ocho is one of the top receivers in the league and that he’ll probably play well next season, this proves that his top priority is not preparing for the upcoming season.

In the time that Chad’s dancing away, guys like Andre Johnson, Reggie Wayne, Roddy White, Larry Fitzgerald, and Steve Smith are probably busting their butts in the weight room and on the field. Chad will be polishing up his moves for his newest touchdown celebrations instead. No hard feelings but I hope he gets voted off quickly so he can focus on football. Ocho may not get into legal trouble off the field like his teammates but he’s still causing just as big of a distraction off of it.

Interview with Karina Smirnoff, Dancing with the Stars

Typically I like to keep things pretty sports-centric around here, but since like 20% of the country watches Dancing with the Stars when it’s on TV, I figure some of you have to be one of those one-in-five watching (unless we all make up the other shmoes watching SportsCenter). Anyway, I had the pleasure of speaking with Karina Smirnoff, one of the best dancers in the world. She just made FHM’s 100 Sexiest list, and she’s dating A.C. Slater from Saved by the Bell. Karina’s in the middle of her fourth season on the show and has been partnered with boxing star Floyd Mayweather Jr. in the past. I asked her what it was like for Floyd to take orders from a woman, how tough this whole dancing thing really is, and how much funny business goes on behind the scenes. Our interview follows, and make sure to vote for Karina Monday night and Tuesday morning (text 3405). And if you’re not going to vote, just remind your wife, girlfriend, and kids to do so. Besides, do you really want Jason Taylor or Kristi Yamaguchi whatever to win? Didn’t think so. OK, check out the interview …
