Dustin Penner doesn’t care if teammates are gay so long as they don’t listen to Nickelback

Nickelback

Many athletes shared their reactions to Jason Collins coming out on Monday. Most sports figures were supportive of Collins, while some others were not.

The best reaction of all may have come from Los Angeles Kings winger Dustin Penner:

It’s hard to beat that tweet. Well played, Penner.

And why is it that everyone hates Nickelback so much?

Kings F Dustin Penner takes shot at athletes who skip White House visit

Dustin-Penner-KingsThe Los Angeles Kings visited the White House on Tuesday to be recognized for their 2011-2012 Stanley Cup title, and by all accounts it appears all members of the team were able to attend. As you know, there is a growing list of athletes — most notably former Boston Bruins goalie Tim Thomas — who, because of personal/political reasons, have refused to travel to the White House with their team to meet the president.

For the most part, there are two sides to the debate. On one side, you have people who feel that athletes are given a forum most of us do not have and that they should use it to stand up for their political beliefs. On the other side, you have people who feel that it is disrespectful to your team and your country to refuse such a rare honor. After Tuesday, we know where Kings forward Dustin Penner stands.

If you ask me, he’s right. Everyone is entitled to their own political opinion, but going to the White House to be recognized for winning a championship does not mean you support the president. It’s a tradition and something that players should experience with their teammates. You can still take a handshake from Barack Obama and vote Republican. In my opinion, athletes should understand that and cast their personal beliefs aside.

Dustin Penner’s Hurt His Back When he Stretched to Eat Pancakes

The headline says it all. LA Kings winger Dustin Penner was sent home from practice Saturday with a tight back. How did his back get hurt? When he stretched to eat pancakes in the morning.

“Apparently it’s one of those mysterious things, where you can throw it out (from) sneezing. I just leaned over to dip into some delicious pancakes that my wife made,” Penner explained to Kings Insider.

“It’s just like it [the pain] wraps around you and squeezes. … So it was disappointing. Hopefully it’s just an isolated incident, and not something that’s going to become chronic.”

Most sports fans were probably unfamiliar with Penner, and I’m guessing this isn’t the way he wanted to become known. If anything can comfort Dustin in this difficult time, it’s knowing that there are plenty more weird injuries where this came from, many much worse than this.

Dustin Penner Banks a Goal Off Ian White’s Face (Video)

This goal actually happened on Saturday, but I’m only getting to it now because I’m probably the only person in America who missed the Oilers-Flames game that day. Luckily for us, the internet exists to ensure nobody misses the awesome goal that happened in the game. Early in the second period with the game tied at 1, Dustin Penner took a centering pass and flipped it off Flames defenseman Ian White’s face. The puck banked off his face and into the net, giving the Oilers the lead. If you haven’t seen it yet, you must check it out:

White needed six stitches to close the cut but he returned to the game. With no points on the season, I’m just sad the scorekeepers didn’t credit him with an assist on the play.
