Ray Lewis, Emmitt Smith trash Cowboys defense

Cowboys defenseThe Dallas Cowboys were blown out on Monday night 45-28 by the Chicago Bears in what turned out to be their latest poor performance on defense.

The Cowboys allowed 498 yards and 32 first downs in the loss. They made backup quarterback Josh McCown look like an MVP candidate, allowing him to throw for 348 yards and four touchdowns. There was nothing positive to say about their defense.

On ESPN’s postgame show, Ray Lewis stated the obvious about Dallas’ defense, saying they might have one of the worst defenses in the NFL.

“Taking no credit away from [McCown], but when you think about who he played against, that may be one of the worst defenses in the NFL today,” Lewis said. “You see how they were just out of position. Nobody communicating. The balls that they had an opportunity to make interceptions … they could have made three interceptions.

“When you think about the Dallas Cowboys, when you look at them as a total team, there is no balance there. I think Tony Romo had a pretty good night, but everything else was just bad.”

Despite calling them one of the worst defenses in the league, Lewis’ thoughts on the Cowboys seemed tame compared to Emmitt Smith.

The former Cowboys legend tweeted his disgust for the defense all night. This is how his thoughts unfolded as the game progressed:

Fred Smoot: Nobody likes Emmitt Smith

Fred-Smoot-RedskinsFred Smoot spent seven of his nine years as an NFL pro with the Washington Redskins, so his hatred for the Dallas Cowboys comes naturally. The teams in the NFC East tend to dislike one another more than teams in other divisions, but what is Smoot’s beef with Emmitt Smith?

During a recent podcast with Guest House Radio (plenty of NSFW language), Smoot discussed some of his rivals and opposing players that he did not get along with. When the topic of the NFL’s all-time leading rusher came up, the former cornerback pulled no punches. Sarah Kogod of DC Sports Bog transcribed some of the podcast for us:

“Nobody that meets Emmitt Smith likes Emmitt Smith,” Smoot said. “Have you ever heard anybody say, ‘Hey man, I met that Emmitt Smith and I really love him?’ Nobody likes Emmitt Smith. I don’t know if he’s just a jerk because he’s a Cowboy. I don’t know. He be rubbing people the wrong way.”

As Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett could tell you, Smoot does not hold back when expressing an opinion about someone he doesn’t like. I understand why he hates the Cowboys, but I’m not sure what Smith did to make Smoot hate him so much. Plenty of Hall of Famers are viewed as arrogant and not well-liked, but it’s rare to hear someone trashing Emmit.

Emmitt Smith Cried During HOF Speech

For all the awful moments Emmitt Smith had as a football analyst at ESPN, he erased much of it with his moving speech on Saturday evening in Canton. Expected to deliver the longest speech during the induction ceremony and hog the spotlight, Emmitt stole the show — in a good way.

Speaking last of the seven accomplished Hall of Famers from the 2010 class, Emmitt was just that in his speech — total class. He explained how he dreamed of playing for the Dallas Cowboys at the age of six, how he wrote down a list of goals he hoped to accomplish in the NFL, and he wound up making good on all of it with hard work and dedication. While Emmitt did talk about himself, he spent most of his time at the podium recognizing and thanking others. He talked about his family, his teammates, and his coaches.

Emmitt spent time thanking the other members of the triplets (Michael Irvin and Troy Aikman), all of his offensive lineman, and his lead blocker, Daryl Moose Johnston. In fact, Emmitt broke down while thanking Moose in what was the most emotional moment of the entire night. Here’s the Emmitt Smith crying video from his Hall of Fame enshrinement speech:

The Emmitt Smith Has Finally Been Fired by ESPN Tribute Video

I don’t have quite the scorn that Pro Football Talk and Awful Announcing have for Emmitt Smith, whose title of “NFL Analyst” with ESPN was always used quite lightly. I’m guessing I missed out on this whole Emmitt Smith thing because I didn’t watch as much NFL countdown as Mike Florio at PFT did, and probably because pointing out awful announcing isn’t my niche like it is for AA. Still, after reading the farewell post from AA to Emmitt, I felt compelled to share the video. Ladies and gentlemen, this is Emmitt Smith at his finest with ESPN. Get your dictionaries handy for this one.

I guess Emmitt is so bad that Awful Announcing had an entire Top 10 list of his best (worst?) screwups, so I highly advise you check those out. Now this is like a catch-22 for the Awful Announcing website. They finally get their wish that a horrible broadcaster is out, but now they lose a lot of good material. Thankfully there are plenty of others out there to pick on.
