Female quarterback Erin Dimeglio wins homecoming queen (Video)

Erin Dimeglio became national news in August when it was reported that she was believed to be the first female to play quarterback in Florida high school football history. Dimeglio is in the news again, and it’s for something she accomplished off the field.

The 17-year-old senior was voted homecoming queen at South Plantation (Fla.) High School. She was crowned at halftime of her team’s football game against Hollywood Hills on Thursday. Making matters more special was her teammate, Hordly Seide, winning homecoming king.

South Plantation won the game 18-0 to improve to 6-0, though Dimeglio did not play. She expressed gratitude to those who voted for her:

“It doesn’t get any better than that,” her mother, Kathleen, told CBS Miami. “I’m so proud of Erin for her determination and follow-through.”

Dimeglio also plays on the girls’ basketball team at South Plantation. CBS Miami reported that the young girl is hoping to play college basketball for the University of Central Florida.

The only thing missing from this story was Dimeglio kicking the winning field goal like the last female football player who was also voted homecoming queen.

Erin Dimeglio plays in first game, makes history in Florida (Video)

Erin Dimeglio is believed to have become the first female to play quarterback in a high school regular-season football game in Florida.

We introduced you to Dimeglio, a senior at South Plantation High School (Fla.), on Friday after her story began spreading online. Dimeglio played quarterback for an entire drive last week, but that was during a preseason game. On Friday night, she saw action at QB in a regular-season game.

Dimeglio, who also plays girls’ basketball for her high school, got into the game with under two minutes left. Her team was beating Nova 31-14 when her coach responded to chants from the fans to put her in.

Dimeglio handed the ball off twice from the shotgun formation and did not attempt a pass.

“I want to throw a pass, but we don’t want to throw a pass because it could be intercepted,” Dimeglio told The Miami Herald. “It wouldn’t be good to throw a pick and run back.”

Dimeglio, the team’s third-string quarterback, entered the game after both quarterbacks ahead of her saw action. She not only had support from the crowd, but also her coaches.
