Peterborough defenseman Gabriel Zakuani likes to tweet. Plenty of athletes like to use Twitter to keep up fan relations and stay on top of what is going on in the world of social media, but Zakuani might be a bit too fond of it. When you start naming children after Twitter terminology, the obsession has gone too far. According to The Sun, Zakuani’s wife gave birth to their third child last month — a boy they (he) decided to name Trendy.
“People have asked if his name is because of ‘trending topics’ on Twitter,” Zakuani said when explaining the unique name. “Maybe it was in the back of my mind.”
As The Sun also pointed out, it is believed that Trendy Zakuani is the only person in the world with that first name. Shocking, isn’t it? What’s even more surprising is that Gabriel basically tricked his wife, Shanice Petrie, who wanted to name their third child something that is related to her job in fashion. I suppose Trendy is related to fashion trends in some way, but I doubt she would have agreed to it had she known Gabriel — who picked the name by himself — had Twitter in mind.
We should also note that Gabriel and Shanice have a history or giving their children bizarre names. When your first two daughters are named Destiny and Heaven, a Twitter-related name for your first son becomes a little less alarming.
H/T to Deadspin for sharing the unfortunate naming disaster.
