Holley Mangold said she found out about Nick coming to London from his Twitter

As of late May, Nick Mangold had decided he was not going to leave the Jets in the middle of training camp to watch his sister Holley Mangold compete in the London Olympics. Rex Ryan gave Nick his blessing, but he felt bad about leaving his teammates right in the middle of the toughest part of the summer. However, the Jets center changed his mind and flew to London to watch Holley finish 10th in women’s Olympic weightlifting over the weekend.

The funny thing is, Holley didn’t even know Nick was coming until she saw it on his Twitter account. Apparently the big fella needs to work on his communication skills.

“I found out through Twitter,” Holley said according to Puck Daddy’s Greg Wyshynski on Twitter. “He never picks up the phone.”

Nick said the team pushed him to go and insisted they didn’t mind, which is why he had a change of heart. Holley’s 10th place finish was not all that bad considering she was fighting through an injury. She was not able to adequately prepare in the weeks leading up to the competition after tearing a tendon in her hand.

“The fact that she has only been doing this for a handful of years and here she is on a world stage at the Olympics competing — I think that’s fantastic,” Mangold said according to ESPNNewYork.com. “She has the world in front of her. If she continues with it, I think she can do some great things.”

Isn’t it just lovely when siblings get along? Hopefully while Nick was in London he did his best to scare off some of the fetish guys that are after his sister as well.

Holley Mangold: Guys with fetishes like me

Holley Mangold is one of the top female weightlifters in the world. The 5’8″ 350 lb 22-year-old is a member of the Team USA Olympic team and she’s set to compete at the Summer Games in London next month.

Holley has become recognizable because she’s the sister of Jets center Nick Mangold (who sadly won’t be in London to watch her compete), and also because she seems to be downright hilarious.

Mangold was the subject of a nice feature in New York Times Magazine which tells the story of how she got into weightlifting. The feature also contains a few awesome quotes from Holley, who doesn’t shy away from the obvious: She’s a large woman.

“I get a lot of Creepy McCreepersons interested in me because I’m so big it’s not normal, it’s like a fetish,” she told writer Elizabeth Weil. “And I don’t like to sit outside. Not because I don’t like to be outside, but usually there are plastic chairs. Once you break a couple plastic chairs, you’re afraid of them all.”

Holley also says she’s contemplated getting an Olympics tattoo, but can’t figure out what or where to get it. She doesn’t think she has the appropriate body type for one.

“Tattoos on fat girls look … Really nasty,” Mangold said. “You really don’t want me to get the rings tramp-stamped on my butt.”

The Olympics are a time when obscure athletes become household names based on what they accomplish. Something tells me that if Mangold performs well in London, and gets time in front of cameras, she’ll see a surge in popularity.

Nick Mangold turns down opportunity to watch his sister at the London Olympics

As most of you probably know, Jets center Nick Mangold has a sister who is competing in the London Olympics this summer. Holley Mangold has qualified for the Olympics in weightlifting. At 5-foot-9 and 350 pounds, she is 43 pounds heavier than Nick and can clean and jerk a whopping 319 pounds. While Nick is certainly proud of his sister for qualifying for the Olympic Games, he has chosen to stay at Jets camp rather than traveling to London to watch her compete.

“God bless Rex (Ryan) because he did offer it to me, but I don’t think I can leave my guys in the middle of training camp,” Mangold said according to Pro Football Talk. “But we’ll figure out a way to watch, and I’m real excited and real proud for her. Somehow, some way, I’ll watch it. But I don’t know if I can do the jump over the pond in the middle of training camp.”

As a fellow competitor, I’m sure Holley fully understands. While Aaron Ross of the Jaguars has decided to miss some camp to travel overseas to watch his wife compete, everyone approaches preparation differently. If Nick feels as though he cannot adequately prepare for the season by taking a few days in the middle of camp to travel to England, you have to respect his professionalism.
