Mark-Sanchez-jersey-burningMark Sanchez had another abysmal performance for the New York Jets on Monday night against the Tennessee Titans, this time putting the final nail in the coffin for the 2012 season and possibly his career with the team. Sanchez threw four interceptions and turned the ball over five times, finishing with an embarrassing passer rating of 32.6. It was the second time in three weeks that he threw three or more interceptions in a single game.

Many Jets fans saw enough of Sanchez weeks ago, but several of them needed the brutal loss to Tennessee to fully give up on the former USC star. As you can see from the video above, a couple of Jets fans decided to put their “sincere disheartening” on display after the game and ceremoniously burn their Sanchez jerseys. And yes, they made sure to mention the infamous butt fumble.

Angry fans often express their displeasure with a player who has left for another team by burning their jersey. That is nothing new. But some vile Cincinnati Bengals fan decided to take the process a step further by urinating on a Carson Palmer jersey before his group lit it on fire.

In the video above featuring some NSFW language, you can see the man urinate on the Palmer jersey as others in the background express their surprise. After the first Palmer jersey was burned, the person recording the video moved on to another area where a second Carson Palmer jersey was being burned.

The jersey burning is no surprise after Palmer said he would refuse to play another game for the Bengals following the 2010 season. He was booed during and after the game, and he even had beer dumped on him as he was leaving the field.

We searched for that video, and came across one that appears to show a drink thrown at Palmer as he was running through the tunnel to exit the field. The video will likely disappoint, but you can watch it here.

The fact that Bears fans have gotten to the point where they are ready to start burning Jay Cutler’s jersey is not a surprise. Cutler was awful in an embarrassing loss to the Packers last week and played poorly again in Chicago’s win over the Rams on Sunday. What is somewhat surprising, however, is seeing a fellow Chicago sports legend partake in the festivities.

According to TMZ.com, the video you see above was taken inside Stanley’s Kitchen and Tap in Downtown Chicago. While it is nearly impossible to make out, the man holding the burning paper that is setting fire to Cutler’s jersey is supposedly former Chicago Blackhawk Chris Chelios. People in the bar are clearly chanting Chelios’ name, which makes it easier to believe.

The concept of jersey burning has become such a common practice in sports that it has lost any originality it once had.  Fans now burn jerseys when a player switches teams or chokes in a big game.  They burn jerseys to forget the past or to express displeasure with a draft pick.  However, there can still be a first time for everything — even when it comes to setting jerseys on fire.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think there has ever been a video of an angry fan teaching his extremely young son how to light a player’s jersey on fire.  That’s why we have Cowboys fans.  Check out this video of a cowboys fan teaching his son how to burn a Tony Romo jersey, courtesy of Los That Sports Blog via Black Sports Online:

Some Redskins fans have gotten carried away with the team’s strong start. Washington is 2-0 and a group of empowered fans believe all the team’s past problems are behind them. Evidence (some language NSFW):

Please tell me what burning an old Albert Haynesworth jersey has to do with anything. I realize the guy was fat, out of shape, and a cancer in the locker room, but why bring back painful memories? Then again, if I could explain why jersey burning was so popular to begin with, I’d be in the psychology business, not sports. Maybe it’s some sort of release for fans. Kind of like what will happen to Haynesworth if he doesn’t pick it up in New England.

Helmet knock to DC Sports Bog and SB Nation DC for the video

Michael Vick remains a polarizing figure in Atlanta. The former Falcons franchise quarterback was beloved by the city. He let down the fans by engaging in illegal dog fighting which resulted in a lengthy prison sentence. Some fans still love Vick, but others in Atlanta are not as forgiving. Some of those angry fans decided to burn an old Michael Vick Falcons jersey in the parking lot prior to Sunday night’s Eagles-Falcons game:

Now I know what’s on your mind at this point … how did a Mets trash can end up in the picture? I can’t answer that question for you, except I will say that everything seems to go wrong for the Mets.

As for Vick, he now joins an exclusive club. Jay Cutler, Brett Favre, and LeBron James have all had their burned jerseys featured here at LBS. That’s some impressive company.

Sunday’s NFC Championship Game had to be one of the worst days in Jay Cutler’s pro career, if not the worst. Not only was he unable to do much against Green Bay’s excellent defense but he also got hurt. A knee injury forced him to leave the game in favor of Todd Collins, who eventually was replaced by a much more effective Caleb Hanie. Current and former players ripped Cutler for pulling out of the NFC Championship Game, and Bears fans were likewise extremely upset. It didn’t take much time for them to express their anger by burning his jersey, LeBron James style. Check out this video of Bears fans burning Jay Cutler’s jersey after their loss to the Packers:

This is going to be one long off-season in Chicago. September can’t get here soon enough if I’m Cutler.
