Deadline reports that James will star in a basketball comedy movie called “Ballers” along with actor/comedian Kevin Hart. Deadline says Hart will co-write the script and then a director will be picked out for the Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment project.
According to Deadline, the movie is about a brother (Hart) who lives in the shadow of his NBA superstar brother (James), but gets the chance to prove himself when he attends a basketball fantasy camp.
The plan is to begin filming next summer when James is in the middle of his offseason.
Ethan J. Skolnick reports that James’ involvement in the project is being spearheaded by Maverick Carter, James’ high school pal and longtime manager. Skolnick says the project is still in development and that no shooting dates have been set yet.
James can become a free agent next summer if he opts out of his contract with the Miami Heat.
If James stars in the movie, he’ll be making the same transition to film as many other NBA superstars. Michael Jordan starred in “Space Jam,” Shaq acted in “Kazaam,” Kevin Durant starred “Thunderstruck,” and Ray Allen was superb in “He Got Game.” Hopefully James’ performance will go down in the Allen category more than the Shaq one.
