Lamar Odom arrested for DUI

Lamar OdomJust when we thought it could not get any worse for Lamar Odom, he goes out and gets arrested for driving while under the influence. As TMZ first reported, Odom was popped for DUI while cruising around the San Fernando Valley at 3:54 a.m. on Friday morning. He was arrested by the California Highway Patrol and taken to Van Nuys Community Police Station, where he was held on $15,000 bail.

According to the police report, Odom was pulled over on the freeway for driving too slow when an officer noticed him going about 50 mph in a “serpentine manner.” He allegedly ignored the police at first and drove 3 more exits before pulling over. The report states that Odom “showed objective signs of intoxication and was unable to perform field sobriety tests.”

We would like to think Odom has hit rock bottom at this point. The DUI comes at the tail end of a whirlwind week that brought us reports about the NBA veteran abusing prescription drugs and even dealing with a crack addiction. On Thursday, a separate report indicated that the Los Angeles Lakers are willing to offer Odom a roster spot if he completes a rehabilitation course. Assuming that report is true, you have to wonder if his DUI arrest will affect the offer.

Lakers reportedly offer Lamar Odom roster spot if he goes to rehab

Lamar OdomThe Los Angeles Lakers are so concerned about Lamar Odom’s well being they reportedly have offered him a roster spot if he goes to rehab to beat his drug problem.

Radar Online says Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak made the offer to Odom because “the organization and the Buss family are extremely concerned about” Odom. The team reportedly told Odom that if he goes and completes treatment, there will be a roster spot waiting for him.

The Lakers and Clippers were thought to be the teams interested in signing the veteran forward. The Clippers backed off bringing Odom back for the second straight year after reports about Odom’s drug problems were revealed.

In addition to prescription drugs OxyContin and Ambien, Odom is said to be abusing crack.

Radar Online says the NBA took at least six samples from Odom last season and that many showed he was using OxyContin. However, he was exempt from punishment because he had a prescription for the painkiller. The detail that Odom was tested six times also could indicate that he’s in the league’s drug program; as far as we know, players are only tested four times a season.

Odom resisted rehab despite wife Khloe Kardashian’s urging and reportedly believes he can beat the drug problem on his own. He also supposedly does not want to go to rehab because he does not want to miss training camp, which begins next month.

Odom played seven season for the Lakers from 2004-2010 and won two championships with the team.

Lean drink reportedly a popular drug among NBA players

Lamar OdomSeveral alarming reports about Lamar Odom have surfaced over the past week that link the NBA veteran to serious drug use. Assuming the rumors about Odom leaving behind white powders and potent smells in his hotel rooms are true, are we to believe he is the only basketball player who uses recreational drugs? Not at all, according to the latest report from TMZ.

As players like Michael Beasley remind us, marijuana use is fairly common among NBA players. However, several anonymous players and sources reportedly told TMZ that a good portion of the league’s players use hard drugs. A number of players said that Lean, a concoction made up of Sprite and Codeine syrup, has become a popular drug among NBA players and was even used during the 2013 playoffs.

One current “famous” player allegedly told TMZ that he estimates 30% of his co-workers use hard drugs including Molly, Lean and Ecstasy, although he said he has never heard of anyone using cocaine. Another “famous” player estimated that only about 10% of players use hard drugs and agreed that cocaine is rarely one of them because it is too risky.

But how could players be using drugs and slipping through the cracks of the league’s drug testing policy? Players are randomly tested four times throughout the season. As NBA sources pointed out to TMZ, a player’s fourth test can come as early as January. Because of the NBA’s labor agreement, such a player would know they are free from drug tests for the remainder of the season, which could be several months if that player’s team makes the playoffs.

“It’s like Christmas Day,” a recently-retired NBA player reportedly said of the fourth drug test. “We can take whatever we want.”

Perhaps the league needs to work on changing the program so that players are tested once in the final month or two of the season. In any event, the drama surrounding Odom may shed light on a league-wide issue — albeit on a larger scale.

Kris Jenner reportedly wants Khloe Kardashian to divorce Lamar Odom

Lamar Odom Khloe KardashianKhloe Kardashian may want to stay with husband Lamar Odom and try to save their marriage despite his drug problems, but her mother Kris Jenner reportedly is pushing for a divorce.

The New York Daily News reported on Wednesday that Jenner has taken the step to meet with divorce attorney Laura Wasser, who handled Kim Kardashian’s split from Kris Humphries. Jenner not only met with Wasser to encourage Khloe to get a divorce, but also so that Odom and Kardashian could truthfully say they have not met with divorce attorneys should the subject come up.

According to the report, Khloe wants to try helping Odom and believes their marriage can be saved, but her family is encouraging her to make the split. Jenner wants Khloe to collect on their prenuptial agreement and cheating penalty and move on. The Kardashian family is also supposedly worried about Rob, who lives with Odom and Khloe and is tight with the basketball player.

The News also says exactly what we suspected — someone from the Kardashian side (likely Jenner) must have leaked the story to TMZ. In order to destroy someone’s name by dishing all their dirt on drug abuse, you have to have a rock-solid source, which would be someone from the family. We suspected the news came from Jenner because the report was so detailed, released on a Friday night, which is when publicists release bad news so it gets buried over the weekend, and because it painted Khloe in a positive light.

Khloe and Lamar married in Sept. 2009 after briefly dating. They began filming a reality TV show that Odom supposedly blamed for his basketball struggles. Odom was recently kicked out of the house by Khloe amid multiple reports about him cheating. It was later reported that Odom is a drug user hooked on crack.

Pau Gasol worried about Lamar Odom

The rumors surrounding Lamar Odom over the past week have surely alarmed many people who are close to him, one of who is his former Los Angeles Lakers teammate Pau Gasol. Early Tuesday morning, Gasol sent the following tweet:

Lamar-Odom-Phil-JacksonThe more reports we read, the more it sounds like Odom is in need of serious help. In its initial report, TMZ said Odom began using drugs two years ago after his cousin was murdered and he was involved in a car crash that killed a pedestrian. On Monday, another story from TMZ claimed Odom was using serious drugs while he played for both the Los Angeles Lakers and Dallas Mavericks.

While we don’t know the exact extent of Odom’s alleged drug use, we do know that there have been rumors that he is hooked on prescription pills and even crack. If that is true and his drug abuse dates back to his days with the Lakers and Mavericks, you would think the league’s drug testing policy would have picked up on it or his teammates would have noticed.

Whether the various reports wind up being true or not, I’m sure Gasol isn’t the only former teammate who is worried about Odom. Between the rumors about hardcore drugs and the incident where he blew up on the paparazzi, it seems obvious Odom could use some sort of help.

Lamar Odom reportedly on drugs with Mavericks, possibly Lakers

Lamar Odom Lamar Odom was on drugs while playing for the Dallas Mavericks and likely the Los Angeles Lakers, according to a report.

TMZ says there is evidence from his hotel rooms on the road that Odom was using serious drugs while playing for both teams.

Odom’s hotel room where the Mavs stayed in Memphis in March 2012 reportedly showed strong signs of drug use. According to TMZ, there was major carpet damage in Odom’s room at The Westin in Memphis, including quarter-sized burn marks, and the carpet had to be replaced. Hotel employees found white powder on the desk and reportedly say the room reeked of noxious smoke.

TMZ says other hotel rooms where Odom stayed on the road while with the Lakers showed similar signs.

Odom reportedly was smoking OxyContin and cocaine while with the Mavericks. None of his teammates knew about the drug use, though it was evident Odom was having problems.

Odom had an awful season with the Mavericks and was so bad they paid him not to play so they could use the roster spot on someone of worth. You may recall that Odom and Pau Gasol were traded in a three-team deal in Dec. 2011 that would have brought Chris Paul to the Lakers, but the trade was rejected by commissioner David Stern. Odom was nearly in tears at the thought of the Lakers dealing him. They eventually traded him to the Dallas Mavericks, which was a total disaster.

The drug timeline actually explains a lot about Odom’s struggles and makes a lot of sense when examining some of the stories he was involved in. The guy was an emotional wreck that season and never clicked with the Mavs. He said he was in such a bad mental state that he thought about taking the year off from basketball. In the summer of 2011, Odom’s cousin was murdered and he was involved in a car crash that killed a pedestrian. TMZ’s initial report said Odom began using drugs two years ago, which would place it right after that difficult time in his life.

More recently, Odom reportedly has been hooked on crack.

We obviously hope that Odom is able to clean up his life, but we have some serious questions here. If Odom was using these kinds of drugs during the NBA season, how was he not picked up during the league’s drug testing? They need to seriously reevaluate their testing if Odom was able to abuse drugs during the season and never get punished. Had he tested positive, he might have been able to get help sooner.

Lamar Odom in hotel room, not missing

Lamar OdomLamar Odom is not missing, contrary to a previous report, but he is dealing with an unspecified drug problem, per ESPN.

ESPN reported on Monday that Odom is in a Los Angeles hotel room where friends are trying to get him help for an “unspecified drug problem.”

Odom’s agent Jeff Schwartz denied a TMZ report that said nobody was able to reach Odom for 72 hours. He says wife Khloe Kardashian knows where Odom is.

“Lamar is not missing. His wife knows exactly where he is.”

Schwartz also told ESPN that Odom, 33, still has plans to continue his NBA career. Odom played last season with the Los Angeles Clippers and is currently a free agent.

A report about Odom’s alleged drug problem first emerged on Friday night. The drug issue was cited as the reason for Odom’s marital problems with Kardashian. While one report said Odom was hooked on OxyContin and Ambien, another report said he was using crack and missing.

Odom was kicked out of the house by Kardashian last week, so it’s unsurprising to learn that he is staying at a hotel.
