9/11 truther Matthew Mills on how he invaded Super Bowl: ‘I said I was running late’

A 9/11 truther named Matthew Mills somehow made his way into the media room after the Super Bowl on Sunday night and interrupted Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith’s press conference. Mills, who was later arrested and charged with trespassing, delivered a simple message about how he believes the American government was behind the 9/11 attacks. But how did he get in?

On Monday, Mills explained to NJ.com how he was able to bypass a number of security checkpoints at MetLife Stadium by telling employees he was late for work.

“I just said I was running late for work and I had to get in there,” he said. “It was that simple. I didn’t think that I’d get that far. I just kept getting closer and closer. Once I got past the final gate and into the stadium, I was dumbfounded.”

Mills, who describes himself as an independent journalist, said his original intent was just to get close to the stadium to conduct some interviews. When he spotted an employee bus at Secaucus Junction, he walked right on with an old credential he found at a festival that looked somewhat similar to the Super Bowl XLVIII media badge.

Security staffers are supposed to run the barcode on each media member’s badge, but Mills said he kept using the “I’m running late” excuse and it kept working. He didn’t have a ticket to the game or a valid press pass.

As we mentioned before, everyone is fortunate Mills was just a 9/11 truther and not someone who was a lot more dangerous. Believe it or not, his stunt probably did the NFL a service. They obviously need to tighten up their security measures for future events.

Super Bowl 9/11 truther Matthew Mills arrested for tresspassing

One of the most bizarre moments from Super Bowl XLVIII came during Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith’s postgame press conference. While answering questions from reporters, Smith was suddenly interrupted by a conspiracy theorist who said America was responsible for 9/11. That man has been identified and arrested.

Matthew Mills, a 30-year-old from Brooklyn, was taken into custody and charged with trespassing. Mills appeared to be wearing some sort of credential around his neck when he grabbed the microphone, clearly startling Smith.

“Investigate 9/11,” he shouted. “9/11 was perpetrated by people in our own government.”

With an event as big as the Super Bowl, you wonder how this nut job was able to get a media credential and then make his way right up to the podium. Fortunately, the encounter turned out to be harmless. Hopefully security is tighter in the future.
