Michael Phelps says there is no chance he will return to Olympics in 2016

If Michael Phelps wanted to, he could return to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio and pad his own records. The 18-time gold medal winner could probably snag a few more if he took the time to train properly, but at this point he has not given us any reason to believe that is going to happen.

During a trip to Brazil to receive the Exceptional Achievement Award at the Laureus World Sports Awards last week, Phelps reiterated that his competitive swimming career is over.

“It has been an amazing career and it is crazy to think that it is over,” Phelps said according to United Press International. “But I’ve done everything that I wanted to do in sport. I wanted to change swimming and take it to a level, and I have. But I will continue to be a part of sport and help grow sports. That is a goal and a passion of mine”

Phelps said he is planning to attend the 2016 Olympics as a spectator, but at this point it appears Ryan Lochte’s prediction about Phelps’ future is unlikely to fruition.

“I am having fun,” Phelps said of enjoying his time off. “I love being retired, I can’t stress it enough. I am happy, smiling, and more relaxed. It’s something that I have wanted for a long time and now I’m happy that I can make the most of it.”

Is it completely out of the question? Phelps is only 27 years old, so it’s not like he would be unable to handle the physical demands of training for another Olympic Games. That being said, he needed an NFL superstar to convince him to compete in London last summer. That probably says all we need to know.

Michael Phelps’ new girlfriend Sarah Herndon opens up about their relationship

Michael Phelps has wasted no time finding a new girlfriend after reportedly breaking up with Megan Rosse at the end of last year. His new girlfriend, a 22-year-old model and waitress named Sarah Herndon, opened up about her relationship with Phelps in a recent interview with the Daily Mail.

Herndon says she met the 18-time Olympic gold medalist just before Christmas while on a family trip to Cabo San Lucas. The timeline of the story makes perfect sense, since that’s right around the time we heard Phelps broke things off with Rosse. The Olympic legend supposedly spotted Herndon (pictured below) at a club with her sisters and invited them to join his party. Herndon says she later joined Phelps on a lobster fishing trip and that’s when they hit it off.

Herndon“We were holding hands and he was putting his arm around me when I was cold, he’s really caring and affectionate,” she told the Daily Mail. “He would kiss me in front of his friends – you could tell he was happy to have me there. He was treating me like I was his girl.”

She added that Phelps really won her over when he picked up a lobster and joked with it by saying, “You know I live in the water too!” Isn’t that adorable? Herndon said Phelps flew her back to Baltimore on his private jet after the vacation ended where he showed her around a bit and took her to see “Zero Dark Thirty.” He later invited her to join him in cheering on his Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl in New Orleans, but she had already made other plans.

Michael Phelps credits Ray Lewis for his decision to compete in 2012 Olympics

Michael-Phelps-scarfMichael Phelps was on the sidelines and in the locker room with the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday night as they defeated the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship Game. Phelps, a Maryland native and avid Ravens fan, took part in the team’s postgame celebration.

In an interview with Yahoo! Sports after Baltimore punched its ticket to New Orleans, Phelps talked about some of the conversations he has had with Ray Lewis. The 18-time gold medalist told Dan Wetzel that he may not have gone to London to compete in the 2012 Olympics if it wasn’t for Lewis.

“I think he’s probably the most inspirational person I’ve ever met in my entire life,” Phelps explained. “A lot of people don’t know this, but he was one of the biggest reasons why I came back for four more years. Just some of the things that we have talked about, and he’s helped me get through, I can’t be more happier.

“He is a very powerful man. A very passionate man. I wouldn’t have been able to [swim in the 2012 Olympics] without him. And he’s been telling me, ‘One more shot, one more shot, we’re going to have it.’ And he did it.”

He may be annoying when he’s crying during the National Anthem, but Ray certainly has a way with words. Phelps clearly looks up to him (unlike Wes Welker’s wife) and we know he was considering retiring before the London Olympics, so it makes sense that Lewis would have had a hand in persuading him to return.

Michael Phelps and Megan Rossee have reportedly broken up

Megan-Rossee-Michael-PhelpsMichael Phelps and Megan Rossee have reportedly broken up, and if the report is true the split had to have happened at some point within the past several days. According to TMZ, Phelps has ended his relationship with the model/actress:

According to our sources, Phelps felt the relationship wasn’t going anywhere, so he decided to end it so he could pursue other options.

That certainly could be true, but it appears Rossee spent the holidays with Phelps and his family in Baltimore. The two were together having a grand ole time at the aquarium as recently as Thursday, as evidenced by this photo that she tweeted:

Phelps and Rosse have reportedly been dating since last winter, but they made their first public appearance at the London Olympics back in August. Phelps is a very eligible bachelor who will likely have no problem on the open market, but it’s tough for normal people like us to understand breaking up with someone who looks like Rossee. To each his own. I’m sure the couple had its reasons.

Ryan Lochte: I believe Michael Phelps will make a comeback for the Rio Olympics

Michael Phelps has won his last Olympic medal. The 27-year-old announced his retirement after becoming the most decorated Olympian of all time in London by winning his 22nd medal. He holds the all-time record for gold medals with 18, which is nine more than those who are trailing him. Phelps has little left to prove, but fellow U.S. Olympic swimmer Ryan Lochte is not convinced he is done proving it.

The next Olympic Games aren’t until 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, and Lochte told The Telegraph he believes Phelps will have changed his mind about competing by then.

“Michael Phelps says he’s retired,” Lochte said. “The sport will miss him, he is one of my favorite rivals and I will miss him. But I think he will come back. When you do something for so long every day … He’s still young. I think he will be back for Rio.

”We’ll see, he’ll miss the sport.”

It doesn’t take long to get out of shape if you’re not training, but Lochte added that he believes Phelps is talented and physically gifted enough to catch up should he change his mind.

Phelps seems to be enjoying life after the Olympics, even if it has been rumored that he has a gambling problem and would benefit from not having as much free time on his hands. While a return to action wouldn’t shock us, Phelps seems genuine when he says he has put competitive swimming in his past. He wasn’t nearly as dominant in London as he was in Beijing, and it would stand to reason that he’d fall further behind in Rio if his heart isn’t fully in it. Simply adding to his personal records may not be worth a return.

Michael Phelps tries crowd surfing in Las Vegas club, fails (Video)

Michael Phelps was at XS nightclub in Las Vegas on Monday night, and he appeared to be the hit of the club. As you can see in the video above, the 18-time gold medalist even attempted to go crowd surfing at one point. Unfortunately, his trip in an inflatable raft with a woman did not go so well — the crowd dropped him straight on his butt. That’s a straight party foul on the clubbers, not Phelps. By the way, it looks like the Baltimore native may have been wearing an Orioles cap. If so, those bonus points would negate the crowd surfing fail.

Channing Crowder: Michael Phelps smoked weed with Young Jeezy, Ryan Lochte a hippie pothead

When the infamous photo of Michael Phelps with his mouth pressed against a bong hit the internet more than three years ago, former Miami Dolphins linebacker Channing Crowder was not surprised. Crowder, who is now a mid-day host at 560 WQAM in Miami, told “The Jorge Sedano Show” he saw Phelps smoking weed no more than three weeks prior to the picture coming out. And the 18-time gold medalist was supposedly in good company.

“I was on South Beach probably three weeks before (the infamous photo came out)” Crowder explained. “Everybody knows who Young Jeezy is — he was in (the club). It was crazy because it was Young Jeezy and Michael in the next section over from us at (a nightclub). I look and I see Young Jeezy’s hanging out with a big old white guy and it was Michael Phelps.
