Miesha Tate feels she is due a pay raise in next UFC contract

Miesha Tate

Miesha Tate is one of the UFC’s carryovers from Strikeforce and still fighting on her old deal with the old organization. Tate has fought three times for the UFC and has one fight left on her contract, and she believes she is worthy of a pay raise on her next deal.

Speaking at an event in New York Thursday to raise awareness for HIV testing and safe sex, Tate shared her contract thoughts with MMA Fighting.

“I do want to get paid more, of course,” she said. “I think my stock’s gone up a lot since fighting in the UFC. I think the contract that transpired when I was still in Strikeforce, transitioning to the UFC, doesn’t reflect what I feel like I’m worth. So that’s a whole process that has to happen.”

Tate says she would like to have a new deal in place before her final fight on her current deal. She lost her first two fights in the UFC — first to Cat Zingano and then Ronda Rousey — but she beat Liz Carmouche last month. Sarah Kaufman, to whom she lost in 2009, has called her out since and wants to face her again.

Tate says she hasn’t responded because she doesn’t want to get into the cat-calling Twitter game, but if you connect the dots, it seems like she has more important things on her mind before beginning to discuss her next opponent. Miesha reportedly made $28k to fight Carmouche and an additional $28k as a win bonus. She definitely is worth more than that.

Miesha Tate: Gina Carano fighting Ronda Rousey is a joke

Miesha Tate

If you think that Gina Carano returning from five years away from MMA and getting a shot at Ronda Rousey in her first fight back is a little ridiculous, you’re not alone. Another top female fighter, Miesha Tate, feels the same way.

In an interview with MMA Junkie radio, Tate said she felt like Carano fighting Rousey right away would be “kind of a joke.”

“I really feel that it’s just kind of a joke,” Tate told MMAjunkie Radio. “It really is. Gina was a great fighter, and she’s a beautiful woman. Ronda is a great fighter, and she’s an attractive girl. But to say that Gina should be able to come in after five years of nothing and take on arguably the best female fighter ever? Come on.”

Carano hasn’t fought since August 2009 when she lost to Cyborg for her lone defeat. Rousey, on the other hand, has been fighting regularly since making her professional debut a little over three years ago. Carano has been making movies while Rousey has been mastering her sport. The two are at two completely different points in their careers.

But don’t take this to mean that Tate feels Carano is undeserving of fighting in the UFC; she just feels Carano is undeserving of an immediate title shot. Instead, she thinks Carano should face someone like her as a challenge first before getting the shot at Rousey.

Tate also knows exactly why the UFC want to do a fight between Carano and Rousey. It’s pretty obvious for anyone with eyes.

“The only thing that drives that is they’re both attractive,” Tate said. “It makes the women’s title hold no value. It makes it look like it’s a joke and they just put whatever’s going to sell. If we’re going to really legitimize women’s MMA as a sport and have it respected as a sport, then you have to treat it as such.”

I’ve said the exact same thing. There’s no way the UFC could legitimately have Carano return and fight Rousey immediately. She would need a tune-up fight first — someone she could beat — before that fight is made. But maybe the UFC does not want to risk the possibility of Carano losing a first fight and having the marquee matchup between Gina and Ronda go away.

Ronda Rousey refuses to shake Miesha Tate’s hand (GIF)

Ronda Rousey Miesha Tate handshakeThe beef between Ronda Rousey and Miesha Tate is real.

After defeating Tate by third-round armbar at UFC 168 on Saturday, Rousey refused to shake her opponent’s hand. Tate extended her hand as a show of sportsmanship, but Rousey turned her back on her enemy.

Rousey explained after the fight that Tate went too far by insulting her family. She said she wouldn’t shake her hand for doing that.

“Once you insult my family, I can’t shake your hand,” Rousey said. “For me family comes before anything. I can’t shake the hand of someone who spits on my back.”

Though it’s unclear exactly what Tate did to insult Rousey’s family, this probably goes back to something that happened on “The Ultimate Fighter.” The two fighters have despised each other for years and traded insults all throughout their training and time as opposing coaches on the UFC reality show. Rousey holding a grudge and maintaining it after winning further shows how strong her feelings are for Tate.

Ronda Rousey Miesha TateMiesha Tate did what nobody else has ever been able to do: take Ronda Rousey past the first round of a fight. But she eventually succumbed the same way all of Rousey’s opponents have in the past — by submitting because of an armbar.

Rousey submitted Tate in the third round of their UFC 168 fight to remain undefeated. She is now 8-0, while Tate is now 13-5 and has lost three of her last four.

Ronda Rousey too cocky entering fight with Miesha Tate

Ronda Rousey

Ronda Rousey is a huge favorite entering her rematch with Miesha Tate at UFC 168 for good reason. Rousey is 7-0 and has won all seven of her fights by first-round submission. She is an armbar machine, and it was only in her most recent fight against Liz Carmouche that she looked anything less than invincible. But Rousey is too cocky entering this fight.

Rousey will be starring in “Fast & Furious 7″ and “The Expendables 3″ and has been filming scenes for both movies. Filming has been time consuming; the long hours led to Rousey getting sick, which she says rarely happens. Rousey told MMA Fighting’s Ariel Helwani that the reason she filmed while preparing for a fight was to further challenge herself because just beating Tate again wouldn’t have been enough. You can hear Ariel’s question about filming the movies around the 1:10 mark in the video below:

“I need to prove people wrong about something,” Rousey tells Helwani. “I can’t just have everyone think it’s a foregone conclusion [that I'm going to win]. That doesn’t do anything for me, that doesn’t get me motivated. I need to have people doubting me. And I needed to create a reason for people to doubt me because I already won the UFC title and I already beat Miesha. So I needed to come up with a way to make it even harder and more difficult for people to be like, ‘Is that even really possible?’

“I need to find a way to make sure I’m doing something that’s never been done before for every single fight because that’s the only way I’m going to fight to my fullest potential.”

Despite the balancing act, Rousey says she feels great and that she’s never felt better entering a fight.

Feeling a need to challenge yourself and creating more obstacles is nothing new for top athletes, but it’s certainly risky. Rousey is making it sound like just beating Tate again wouldn’t be enough for her. I’m not sure why she feels that is the case. What, does she want to strap one arm behind her back and see if she can win? Will she only feel satisfied if she beats Tate by hopping on one leg?

It’s a dangerous attitude for her to have, even if I still think she’ll win the fight. She needs to give Tate much more credit than that.

Ronda Rousey would give Miesha Tate lube for Christmas

Ronda Rousey SantaRonda Rousey’s dirty and inappropriate mind was at work again when she was asked what she would give Miesha Tate for Christmas.

Rousey did a video for FOX where she was asked what she would give as Christmas gifts to multiple MMA personalities. A lot of the gifts she mentioned were nice and thoughtful. That was until she was asked what she would give Tate, her nemesis and upcoming opponent.

“I’d get her some lube for [Bryan] Carraway, because spitting on it’s just mean.”

Carraway, of course, is Tate’s boyfriend, who also happens to be an MMA fighter.

Ronda Rousey for ya, everybody.

The rivalry between her and Tate is definitely one of the fiercest in all sports. It’s seriously at Auburn-Alabama levels.

Oh, and after volunteering answers like that to innocent questions, it seems wrong for Rousey to get upset when people ask her sex questions

Her mustache trimmer gift for Cyborg Santos was pretty funny, too, though.

Miesha Tate posing nude like Ronda Rousey is not hypocritical

Miesha Tate Ronda RouseyMMA fighter Miesha Tate was one of the many athletes who posed nude for ESPN The Magazine’s Body issue, and her photos caused some to call her a hypocrite.

Tate’s nemesis in the female fight game, Ronda Rousey, posed nude for ESPN the Magazine last year. Tate was among those who criticized Rousey for the appearance. Tate was not critical of Rousey for taking off her clothes and promoting her sexiness. Rather, Tate said Rousey posing nude was hypocritical because Rousey was critical of UFC ring girls for posing in Playboy.

“I just get so tired of Ronda criticizing everyone else,” Tate told MMA Heat last year. “I think we should just all live our lives and I don’t really care what she does or what anyone else does. It’s not our place to judge. I’m just sick of hearing her mouth off about other girls this and that, and Kim that, the Playboy girls this. I’m just like ‘just shut up’.

“To me it’s so stupid that you would talk crap about ring girls doing Playboy, which that’s kind of what their appeal is – it’s a sex appeal. For an athlete, there’s no real reason to have to get nude, although I think there’s nothing wrong with ESPN. I don’t think what Ronda did was wrong. I’m just saying it’s not okay to talk crap about the ring girls and then get 1 percent less naked, and say it’s okay. To me it kind of falls in that hypocrisy.”

So you got that? Tate never said she was opposed to selling her sex appeal, nor did she ever say there was anything wrong with ESPN or posing for the magazine. She just said talking crap about others for doing it and then doing it yourself makes you hypocritical.
