Nick Swisher will take over A.J. Burnett’s pie-smashing duties for Yankees

The idea during the offseason is to address your biggest needs, and the Yankees have done just that. By trading A.J. Burnett, the Yankees unloaded a pitcher that was clearly a bad signing and couldn’t cut it in New York. The departure of Burnett also left a huge hole within the organization, however. As you may know, A.J. was in charge of smashing his teammates in the face with a shaving cream pie after walk-off hits last season. Fortunately, Nick Swisher is ready to step up and fill that void.

“You know, A.J. was a good buddy of mine, and he was a good buddy of all the guys in here,” Swisher said in an interview with MLB.com. “I’m sad to see him go, and wish him the best of luck. We’re going to have to keep something going, man, because people in New York want pie! You know, let’s just keep it going.”

The one issue that could arise is that Swisher is a position player, meaning he could be the one delivering the walk-off hit. He says he won’t be pieing himself if that happens and that someone else will step up. Thank goodness for that.

It certainly sounds like the Yankees are ready to go. Their pie-in-the-face plan is in order. Oh yeah, and they happened to add Michael Pineda and Hiroki Kuroda which should solidify their starting rotation. All is well in New York.

No, Tim Tebow Did Not Help Nick Swisher Propose to Joanna Garcia

Tim Tebow may have saved the manatees and he may be able to touch MC Hammer, but he did not help Nick Swisher propose to girlfriend Joanna Garcia. In a wild rumor amongst rumors, Swisher’s wikipedia page suggests “Football player Tim Tebow assisted Swisher with requesting Garcia’s hand in marriage by speaking to her parents.” Rather than blaming wikipedia for the story, the onus is probably on this June story in the Orlando Sentinel.

Even if many of us have learned better than to simply trust wikipedia (or the Orlando Sentinel in this case), a writer for Florida Today either took the bait or thought this would make for a cute story. He approached Nick Swisher armed with the story in hand to give Swish a chance at denial. And did Swisher deny!

“I’m a man! I don’t need to do that! Where’d you hear that?”

“It’s on Wikipedia,” I said.

“Dude, you’re in the media. You know better than to believe Wikipedia.”

Video: Nick Swisher Pitches for the Yankees in Blowout Loss to Rays

Forget Mariano Rivera — the Yankees have a new closer. In case you were wondering what the highest payroll in baseball can buy, here’s the answer: a pitching staff that gives up 15 runs on 17 hits. Since the game was already out of hand at 15-5 in the bottom of the 8th, Joe Girardi decided to have utility man Nick Swisher throw the final half-inning for the Yanks.

Girardi’s decision was actually pretty smart considering he only burned three relievers on the staff despite Chien-Ming Wang lasting just one inning of his start. It was actually pretty funny watching the guys in the dugout crack up. Notice how Jose Molina didn’t even put down a sign at first. Ultimately this is just another example of what a good sport Swisher is — he hadn’t even pitched since his freshman year of high school. By the way, does anybody feel worse than Gabe Kapler right about now? How do you punch out against a guy throwing softer than BP fastballs??

Nick Swisher Is Better Than the Entire Oakland Team

OK, first check the final score of the game, and then check the scoring summary below:

Pretty impressive huh? The A’s were held to just four runs, but miraculously Nick Swisher drove in six. Incredible! The boxscore was from the usually impeccable Yahoo! Sports.
