The Los Angeles Sparks defeated the Tulsa Shock in a dramatic double-overtime game on Saturday night, but the victory came at a price. That price was paid by Sparks forward Nneka Ogwumike, who hit a clutch layup and got fouled in the process to give LA a lead toward the end of the first overtime.
However, it was not the foul that got the best of Ogwumike. After she hit the shot, teammate Candice Parker came running over for an enthusiastic hug/chest bump/headbutt. The end result was an ugly-looking bloody eye for Ogwumike. Here’s a screen shot of the damage:
Fortunately, Ogumike returned to the court after receiving medical care and was able to help her team pull out the win in the second overtime. In terms of celebration mishaps, the injury was nothing compared to that brutal flying headbutt we saw after a rugby game a couple years back. We’re all grateful for that.
