BYU DL Jordan Richardson proposes to girlfriend after long race (Video)

BYU defensive lineman Jordan Richardson earned some serious creativity points for his marriage proposal last weekend. The senior-to-be from Idaho Falls, Idaho proposed to girlfriend Chelsea Young after she completed a 30-or-so mile race.

Young was running in the Ragnar Relay SoCal event, according to CNN. When she crossed the finish line, a banner saying “Will U Marry me?” was waiting for her. Richardson, wearing a suit and tie, then got down on his knee and proposed. She said yes and they shared a kiss.

How does that stack up with some of the other great sports-related proposals we’ve seen?

Senators fan proposes to her Leafs fan girlfriend at hockey game (Video)

Who said cross-Canadian rivalries can’t get along? Typically games between the Senators and Maple Leafs are accompanied by swearing and hostility, but all that changed for a few minutes on Saturday night at Scotiabank Place. A Leafs fan named Alicia was blindfolded and led onto the ice during the second intermission. When the blindfold was taken off, she looked up to see a message from her girlfriend Christina, a Senators fan, flashing across the scoreboard that read, “My love for you is a journey, starting at forever and ending at never. You’re my world. Zing XOX.”

As you can see from the video above, Christina then strolled out onto the ice. The two embraced and exchanged a few words, and then Christina got down on one knee and proposed to Alicia. As the scoreboard indicated, she said yes, sending the crowd into a frenzy.

Same-sex marriage was legalized in Canada back in 2004, and players like Sean Avery have done their best to make the NHL tolerant over the past few years. As far as proposals are concerned, I’d put Christina slightly behind that Olympic swimmer who proposed on the medal stand and miles ahead of the UCLA fan who got rejected hard.

Dale Murphy’s son Jake proposes after throwing out first pitch

Jake Murphy, the son of Braves legend Dale Murphy, had a big moment in his life Wednesday when he proposed to his girlfriend. Luckily he had some help from the Braves organization in choreographing the proposal.

After hearing that Jake planned to propose to girlfriend Arianne Ingersoll during his family’s trip to Spring Training, Braves president John Schuerholz suggested they stage it around a ceremonial first pitch.

So Jake threw out the ceremonial first pitch before Wednesday’s Braves-Nationals exhibition game to his father, grabbed the mic, called over his girlfriend, and dropped to one knee to ask her to marry him. She said yes, and as the Braves broadcasters pointed out, she put on a customized Braves jersey with “Murphy” on the back before trying on her engagement ring.

“It was really a nice moment,” said Dale. “We really enjoyed it.”

Jake is 22 years old and a tight end for the University of Utah football team. He’ll have some exciting news to share with his friends at school when he returns from his trip.

Olympic swimmer Matt Grevers proposes to his girlfriend on medal stand (Video)

Olympic swimmer Matt Grevers really needed to come in first at the Missouri Grand Prix on Saturday night. If not, it would have put a damper on his plans. Proposing to your girlfriend from the medal stand is certainly original enough, but a gesture like that would be lacking a bit if not done from the highest point possible. Fortunately, Grevers won his race with a time of 53.57 seconds. He then popped the question to his girlfriend, Olympic hopeful Annie Chandler. She said yes. Here is a video of the proposal that Outside the Boxscore shared with us:

“I asked her father for permission back at the end of November. And we needed to talk a little more until I really got it,” Grevers said while smiling according to the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “But I got it, and I’ve just been searching for a unique way to try to pop the question.”

Woman Proposes to Man at Portland Trail Blazers Game

This story comes to you straight out of the man bites dog files. A woman proposed to a man Monday night at the Portland Trail Blazers game. Few details are available, except we have this from Ben Golliver, who runs Blazersedge.com:

“A woman just proposed to a man named Jeremy on the jumbotron. She gave him a ring too.”

Later, a woman told Blazers Edge that her adopted daughter, Amber, was the one who proposed.

I’d be inclined to call this a staged event, but the last time I made such an accusation, it turned out I was wrong. So what do you think, are you alright with a woman breaking tradition by proposing to a man?

Man’s Marriage Proposal at UCLA Game Gets Rejected (Video)

We’ve seen plenty of marriage proposals that occurred in sports venues. In November, a Clemson offensive lineman proposed to his girlfriend on Senior Day. In May, an MMA fighter proposed to his lady after winning a match in the cage. Those were pretty sweet, mostly because they had happy endings. One man who proposed during the UCLA-Richmond game in December wasn’t as lucky:

Clemson OL Mason Cloy Proposes to Girlfriend Before Game on Senior Day

Clemson offensive lineman Mason Cloy proposed to his girlfriend on the field before his team’s game against Wake Forest Saturday and she said yes.

It was Senior Day at Clemson, and Cloy is a redshirt senior, so this was his last home game in Death Valley.

Between his team’s 31-28 victory over Wake to clinch the ACC Atlantic Division and his engagement, it was probably the perfect day for Cloy. Congratulations to him and his fiancee, as they now go into the category of football players who have proposed on the field.
