Christian Ponder named daughter after Bobby Bowden

Christian-Sam-PonderChristian Ponder and his wife Samantha Steele welcomed their first child into the world over the weekend. The couple took the birth of their new daughter as an opportunity to pay tribute to a Florida State legend.

According to ESPN’s Ben Goessling, the Ponders named their little girl Bowden Saint-Claire. That’s Bowden as in Bobby Bowden, and that is indeed why Christian and Samantha chose the name.

Christian owes much of his success in life to Bowden. He was a star at Florida State and has been below average at best with the Minnesota Vikings. Had it not been for Bowden, Ponder probably would not have been drafted in the first round of the 2011 NFL Draft. That means he would not have made as much money to this point and maybe he would not have even had a chance to meet his future wife.

Congratulations to Christian and Sam on the newest edition to their family.

Samantha Ponder takes shot at fake John Madden Twitter account

Christian-Sam-PonderMinnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder was actually playing pretty well on Thursday night before he suffered an injury. Ponder left the game late in the third quarter after he recklessly dove for the end zone and reportedly dislocated his shoulder.

At the moment, it’s tough to tell whether the Vikings are better off with or without Ponder. His interception on the first drive of the night against the Washington Redskins was his seventh of the season in only six games. After he exited the game, the well-known fake John Madden Twitter account poked fun at Ponder with a pretty clever tweet.

Ponder’s wife Sam, formerly known as Samantha Steele, did not appreciate the joke.

Clearly, the person who runs @FauxJohnMadden has had contact with Sam before. I can’t imagine what type of career advice they could have been seeking from the sideline reporter, but they just got roasted nonetheless. What do you expect? Couples who dress up like this for Halloween always stick together.

Christian Ponder and Samantha Steele go as Wendy Peffercorn and Squints from ‘The Sandlot’ for Halloween

Christian Ponder may not even be 1/1000th of the football player that Tom Brady is, but the Minnesota Vikings quarterback and his better half know how to do Halloween the right way. Earlier, we showed you the adorable little Wizard of Oz costumes Brady and Gisele broke out for their Halloween party. Meh — talk about unoriginal. Ponder and his wife Samantha Steele took it to another level.

Ponder and Steele went as Squints and Wendy Peffercorn. For those of you who don’t know, those are characters from the classic baseball movie “The Sandlot.” And also, shame on you if you didn’t.

The Halloween creativity is at an all-time high this year and we’re loving every second of it. We’re going to see plenty more costumes, but Sydney Leroux and Alex Morgan are going to be incredibly difficult to top.

Christian Ponder and Samantha Steele met on Twitter, went to Arby’s on wedding night

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder and his wife Samantha Steele seem like one of the more modest couples in the celebrity couple realm. Their relationship progressed quite rapidly, going from dating to engaged to married in the span of just a few months. And their wedding night remained consistent with their low-profile nature.

In a recent interview with Bob Sansevere of the Pioneer Press, Samantha Ponder spoke about how quickly the relationship moved and where it began.

Christian Ponder and Samantha Steele have already gotten married

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Christian Ponder and ESPN sideline reporter Samantha Steele are married. Yes, already. According to the Leader-Telegram, Ponder and Steele were married on Monday afternoon in a courtroom in Wisconsin. St. Croix County Court Commissioner Stephen Dunlap did the honors.

Let’s track this thing. In mid-October, Ponder confirmed the rumors that were circulating about he and Steele dating. Before long, he was sarcastically thanking her for helping the Vikings win games. Earlier this month, Steele confirmed that the two were engaged. Roughly two weeks later, Ponder and Steele have already tied the knot.

Some people just prefer to get things done quickly and quietly. As expected, Ponder and Steele have heard all kinds of speculation about why they chose to get married so quickly and not have a big wedding. Steele sent a pretty funny tweet about it on Wednesday:

When you know what you want, you know what you want. If I got the chance to date Steele I’d probably try to seal the deal as quickly as possible, too.

Christian Ponder and Samantha Steele are engaged

Minnesota Vikings fans who blame ESPN sideline reporter Samantha Steele for Christian Ponder’s dip in production this season are not going to be happy. According to Sports Illustrated’s Richard Deitsch, Steele confirmed on Tuesday that she and Ponder are engaged.

Unless the two were dating for a long time and did a great job of keeping it a secret prior to Ponder confirming it a little over a month and ago, they moved rather quickly. If it seems like just yesterday that the Vikings quarterback was talking about how his girlfriend gives him something to brag about, that’s because it practically was.

Ponder and Steele reportedly met earlier this year on the set of ESPN’s College GameDay. After catching wind that fans were blaming his relationship with her for some of the Vikings’ misfortunes, Ponder sarcastically thanked her when Minnesota defeated the Lions. Considering he’s already given her a ring, it’s safe to say the former Florida State quarterback isn’t fazed by the opinions of others.

Christian Ponder thanks Samantha Steele after win over Lions

If Samantha Steele is one of the reasons the Minnesota Vikings lost two straight games prior to their win over the Detroit Lions on Sunday, she must have had a hand in the victory as well. Since Christian Ponder admitted that he and Steele are dating, he has had to deal with questions about whether or not their relationship has been one of the reasons his play has slipped.

On Sunday, Ponder threw for 221 yards and two touchdowns against Detroit and did not turn the ball over. He was sure to mention his lady after the 34-24 victory.

“I want to thank my girlfriend,” Ponder said according to the Star Tribune. “Because she obviously has such a big impact on how I play. Which allowed me to win. So thank you.”

While the questions about Steele affecting Ponder’s play weren’t a surprise, that doesn’t mean they are fair. Reporters always want to blame the new girlfriend if a player starts playing poorly, but people rarely credit a significant other for a good performance. For that reason, I can’t say I blame Ponder for cracking a joke instead of taking the high road.
