Tarell Brown fires agent after blunder costs him $2 million

Tarell BrownSan Francisco 49ers cornerback Tarell Brown fired his agent after learning that he inadvertently forfeited $2 million because he did not participate in the team’s voluntary offseason workouts.

Brown was set to earn $2.925 million this season in base salary after signing a three-year, $7.125 million extension in 2009. The figure dropped to $925,000 after Brown failed to attend the offseason workouts, which would have triggered an escalator in his deal.

Brown told reporters he learned the news of his salary situation after seeing a Yahoo! Sports report on Twitter. Brown simply chose to work out in his home state of Texas during the offseason and says he would have been with the team had he known about the escalator. He said after practice Thursday that it’s his agent’s job to notify him of important details like that, and that’s why he’s fired agent Brian Overstreet.

“That’s what agents get paid to do – to orchestrate the contract and let you know what you can and can’t do as far as workouts, OTAs, things of that sort,” Brown said, via SFGate.com. “That’s what he got paid to do. He didn’t do that. So, in my opinion, you have to be let go. We all are held accountable for our actions and it’s just part of the business.”

Brown says Overstreet spoke with the team about what they could do to reach an agreement on the matter. Brown was a fifth-round pick of the team in 2007 and has started all of the team’s 37 games (including playoffs) since 2011.

Though he has mostly avoided trouble that we know of since joining the NFL, Brown had some legal incidents during his college days. We posted this story about him when he was preparing for the draft in 2007. It’s old school LBS from two months after the site launched. You should check it out.

Texas CB Tarell Brown sure Loves his Weed

Man, what do you do after a long hard week of workouts for NFL teams as you’re preparing yourself for the biggest step of your life — potentially playing professional football? Answer: you smoke a blunt and just chiillll. Well at least that’s what Texas CB Tarell Brown allegedly did,

Former defensive back Tarell Brown was arrested on misdemeanor marijuana charges in Williamson County Thursday night.

Brown was out on bond Friday and awaits a drug test next week.

Two days ago he tried out for NFL scouts at UT’s Pro Timing Day, hoping to up their draft stock before April 28.

Of course I would be remiss if I did not mention that this is the same Tarell Brown who was arrested for carrying a 9mm gun and two ounces of marijuana the week of the Texas/Ohio St. game last year.

And yes, he survived two taser shocks that night.

Needless to say, the Bengals already have a phone call into his agent.
