‘Sandlot’ star Tom Guiry arrested for allegedly headbutting a police officer

You’re killin’ me, Smalls! Those of you who grew up in the 1980s and ’90s will probably cringe when you hear that Tom Guiry, the actor who played “Smalls” in the epic baseball movie “The Sandlot,” was reportedly arrested at Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston over the weekend. The alleged details do not sound characteristic of the young kid we knew who had never heard of Babe Ruth.

Law enforcement sources reportedly told TMZ that Guiry was told by a United Airlines employee that he was too drunk to board his flight. The employee then phoned airport security, who told Guiry that he could either be taken into protective custody or arrested for public intoxication. It doesn’t sound like he considered either to be a viable option.

Guiry allegedly became belligerent and threatened the officer before attempting to kick him in the face and headbutting him. He was arrested and charged with felony assault on a police officer. Guiry posted $5,000 bail and was released.

We obviously know Guiry is a pretty tough guy based on his ability to get the best of “The Beast,” but he shouldn’t have attempted to use his scrappiness on a police officer. That mugshot is incredibly disturbing. This is a tough day for fans of “The Sandlot.”

I wonder if this would affect the late Roger Ebert’s review of the classic movie.

Benny The Jet Rodriguez Sets MLB Record for Stealing Home Plate

Benny “The Jet” Rodriguez has set a Major League Baseball record for most steals of home in a single season. The Jet set the record Friday afternoon against the Giants when he stole home for the 9th time this season.

The steal occurred in the bottom of the ninth inning when Rodriguez was sent in to pinch run. He got the sign from third base coach Maury Wills, took a suicide lead, and made his bolt for home. The Jet was able to slide in safely before the catcher could tag him out, giving the Dodgers a walkoff 3-2 win in the series opener against the rival Giants.

The crowd and entire stadium erupted after The Jet’s steal, which was believed to be the first walkoff steal of home in over 20 years according to the Elias Sports Bureau. Immediately after the steal, Rodriguez’s teammates mobbed him at home plate and carried him off the field. It was a joyous moment for the Dodgers considering Rodriguez has been reduced to a reserve outfielder and pinch runner role after losing his once-elite speed.
