Vanessa Bryant: ‘I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships’

In addition to giving the Lakers a better chance to win an NBA championship, the acquisitions of Dwight Howard and Steve Nash may actually help Kobe Bryant’s marriage. But how? As you probably know, Kobe and Vanessa Bryant have been trying to reconcile their marriage since earlier in the summer. As far as we know, they have not gotten all the way there yet. Judging by what Vanessa said she looks for in a partner, winning another ring this season could work in Kobe’s favor.

According to Nicki Jhabvala of Sports on Earth (via The Basketball Jones), Vanessa had the following to say during an interview with New York Magazine:

“I certainly would not want to be married to somebody that can’t win championships,” she said. “If you’re sacrificing time away from my family and myself for the benefit of winning championships, then winning a championship should happen every single year.”

If she said this a few months ago we could have made a solid LeBron James joke, but now it wouldn’t really be appropriate.

It’s pretty obvious Vanessa is only interesting in being with a winner. Kobe has five championship rings, but perhaps a sixth could go a long way toward making his wife forget about these pictures from London. Forget tying M.J. — Kobe needs to win his wife back.

UPDATE: Vanessa Bryant has backtracked from her comments. Here’s her statement.

Vanessa Bryant reportedly ‘furious’ over Kobe Bryant partying, shirtless pictures

It may have been a coincidence of timing that got Kobe Bryant in trouble during Team USA’s visit to Barcelona, but the situation has reportedly angered his wife regardless. Last week, Team USA was at a social event in Spain and some photos surfaced that show Bryant in a couple of sticky situations. According to TMZ, the photo you see above was taken at an after party shortly after someone spilled their entire drink on Kobe. He was only briefly shirtless while someone when to get him a new shirt.

Kobe and Vanessa Bryant not divorcing, working on reconciliation

Kobe and Vanessa Bryant are not getting a divorce but are instead working on reconciling their marriage, according to TMZ.

Vanessa filed for divorce last December and needed to wait six months before filing the documents to make their split official, but she apparently is not planning to finalize things.

TMZ says the two have been spending a lot of time together and that they’re trying to work things out. That’s no surprise — between the kiss on the lips they shared on Valentine’s Day and the Kings hockey game the family watched together, all signs were pointing to a reconciliation.

Kobe isn’t living with his family yet, but it looks like he’s managed to get the divorce called off — for now.

Kobe, Vanessa Bryant attend Kings playoff game with their daughters

Is a reconciliation between Kobe and Vanessa Bryant coming? It sure seems that may be the case.

For the second time in two months, Kobe and his wife, who filed for divorce in December, were photographed together. In February, Vanessa attended the Lakers-Hawks game on Valentine’s Day and the two were pictured kissing in a tunnel.

On Sunday, Kobe stuck around Staples Center after the Lakers beat the Mavericks earlier in the day to watch Game 3 of the Kings-Canucks playoff series. He and his family watched the game from seats a few rows above the glass. He and Vanessa sat apart from each other with their daughters in between.

I don’t know what’s going on between them, but they’re clearly getting along much better than most couples who are supposed to be in the middle of a divorce.

A reconciliation between Kobe and Vanessa Bryant may be in store given the way the two smooched on Valentine’s Day.

Yes, Vanessa made an appearance at Staples Center to watch the Lakers beat the Hawks Tuesday night. Even though the two have filed for divorce, nothing is finalized, so there’s a possibility they could still get back together. People who intend to get a divorce don’t kiss on the lips like that.

Not Even a $4 Million Ring Can Help Kobe Bryant This Time

Kobe Bryant’s wife, Vanessa, has filed for a divorce, ending the couple’s 10 and a half year marriage. The court papers list the typical “irreconcilable differences” as the reason for the divorce, but many people believe rumors of Kobe’s cheating pushed her over the edge.

Kobe of course admitted to having sex with a hotel clerk in Eagle, Colorado in 2004. He bought Vanessa a $4 million apology ring and she decided to stick with him. Since then, we’ve heard reports that Kobe was fooling with a Lakers girl (also named Vanessa), and that he was hit with a paternity suit. And of course there was the June lawsuit a woman filed against Kobe, claiming he breached a promise to marry her.

Apparently it’s all too much for Vanessa, and not even a giant apology ring will help this time. They’ve filed for joint custody, and Vanessa is entitled to spousal support. There was no prenuptial agreement, meaning Vanessa will likely receive half of the couple’s wealth.

The Bean met Vanessa in 1999 when she was a 17-year-old dancer in a music video. They got married two years later, and we felt all along it was a bad idea. Now it’s one that will cost Kobe deeply — both financially and emotionally. Maybe it’s part of the reason he has been so upset lately.
