Frank Beamer leads the Harlem Shake for his Virginia Tech players (Video)

Frank-Beamer-Harlem-ShakeBelieve me when I say that I want to ignore the Harlem Shake and just patiently what for it to fizzle out, but every time I tell myself I’m totally done with it someone like Frank Beamer comes along and starts cutting a rug.

Like many other collegiate teams across the nation, the Virginia Tech football team decided to get in on the Harlem Shake trend by making pretty much the same Harlem Shake video every other team has made. They did, however, add an X-factor in the form of Beamer showing us his 66-year-old dance moves like a straight up boss.

As much as I dislike the whole Harlem Shake phenomenon, I’d be lying if I said it hasn’t led to a few laughs. Whether it’s Beamer strutting his stuff or this clever mash-up from the hockey world, not all of these videos have been unbearable.

Virginia Tech will wear flat maroon helmets against Rutgers (Pictures)

When teams unveil new uniforms specifically for their bowl games, the results are usually hit or miss. We’ll file these Virginia Tech helmets under “miss.” If the Hokies were attempting to make their helmets as dull and boring as possible, they certainly accomplished that.

We’re not asking for someone to outdo these amazing Boise State helmets from earlier in the year, because that’s probably never going to happen. However, Virginia Tech could have put forth a little more effort than this. As Ty Duffy of The Big Lead pointed out, tickets for the Russell Athletic Bowl are selling for as low as $5 on StubHub. Perhaps the VT athletic department wanted to excitement over the helmets to match that of the actual game.

Virginia Tech Tries Out Female Kicker Lauren Luttrell

Virginia Tech had a female kicker try out for their team on Monday and she left a positive impression. Lauren Luttrell, who kicked for Spotsylvania High in Virginia last year, decided to see if she could walk-on to Virginia Tech as a kicker. The Washington Post says she did so well that coach Frank Beamer wants another look at her.

“Right now it’s kind of tough to come out there and get a lot of attention. Things are happening so fast right now,” Beamer said. “But I was impressed with her and we’ll bring her back out there in the spring.”

Luttrell played volleyball and traveling soccer in high school and only began kicking a year ago. She tried out for her high school’s team at the insistence of the assistant coach and did well.

As you could imagine, she’s believed to be the first female to try out for Virginia Tech’s football team. If she does make the team, perhaps she could lean on Kathy Ireland for advice on adjusting to life playing with the men.

Frank Beamer Thinks He Was Spied On

Not while he was getting his dirty-dirty on or anything like that, but something much more serious. Eight months after the Chick-Fil-A Bowl (man, they make one hell of a chicken sandwich by the way), the Sultan of Special Teams suspects there was some foul play going on with the Georgia coaching staff.

“We practiced out at Georgia Tech and we let all kinds of people through there … people we didn’t really know,” Beamer told The Roanoke Times. “And I thought it hurt us in the bowl game. I’m not blaming anybody … but I thought Georgia knew exactly what we were doing in several situations.”

Nothing like manning up to a bowl game loss by suspecting the other team of spying eight months after the fact. Man, what I wouldn’t give to see these two teams meet up again this year. Maybe Beamer should start closing his practices to the public so that he can’t use that as an excuse in the future.
