Amelie Mauresmo opens up about split with Andy Murray

Andy Murray

Amelie Mauresmo opened up this week about her recent split with world No. 2 player Andy Murray.

Murray and Mauresmo announced a parting of ways this month after nearly two years together. The announcement was significant because Mauresmo had made history by becoming the first female head coach for a top male pro tennis player when she was hired in 2014.

Mauresmo said that the split had been in the works for a while, in part because of the reduced time commitment she could provide Murray after giving birth to a son. She also seemed to hint that Murray can be difficult to work with.

“Andy is complex,” Mauresmo told French outlet L’Equipe. “On the court, he can be the opposite of what he is in life. It can be confusing. I was there to help. I had the feeling I could not get things done. I had the impression we got to the end of what could be done professionally. It was concluded that it would be difficult to continue.

“I just reduced my number of weeks of attendance since the last Australian Open and we actually spent little time together. It turns out that it was a difficult time for him, I could not help him. But this decision was initiated some time ago.”

Mauresmo’s comments were given in her native French language, with a translation provided by The Guardian.

Under Mauresmo’s guidance, Murray reached the finals of the Australian Open twice and the French Open once, but he failed to win his jewel — a grand slam.
