Nick Kyrgios apologizes to Stan Wawrinka

Nick Kyrgios

Nick Kyrgios has apologized for the incredibly inappropriate comment he made during his Rogers Cup match against Stan Wawrinka on Wednesday night.

“I would like to take this opportunity to apologise for the comments I made during the match last night vs Stan Wawrinka,” Kyrgios wrote on his Facebook page. “My comments were made in the heat of the moment and were unacceptable on many levels. In addition to the private apology I’ve made, I would like to make a public apology as well. I take full responsibility for my actions and regret what happened.”

BBC Sport reports that Kyrgios has been hit with an undisclosed fine from the ATP. The rule book states that players can be fined up to $10,000 for verbal misconduct during a match.

Kyrgios was angry after dropping the first set of his second-round match against Wawrinka. He was unhappy with a couple of calls made by the linesman, and he took out his frustrations by telling Wawrinka that another tennis player “banged” the girl that Stan is rumored to be dating. TV microphones picked up on the audio, as you can see here.

After the match, Kyrgios did not seem apologetic.

“He (Wawrinka) was getting a bit lippy with me, kind of in the heat of the moment,” he said. “I don’t know, I just said it.”

You can read the whole story on the young lady who is caught in the middle of the feud here.

Wawrinka took to Twitter early Thursday morning to urge the ATP to come down hard on Kyrgios. It’s tough to say if the organization did that without knowing the exact amount of the fine.
