Roberta Vinci apologizes to US Open fans for upsetting Serena Williams

Roberta Vinci

Roberta Vinci actually had to apologize for the best moment of her life.

The Italian tennis player upset Serena Williams in the semifinals of the US Open Friday 2-6, 6-4, 6-4 to end Williams’ bid to win the grand slam, and she called it the best moment of her life. She also apologized to the fans for pulling off the win, knowing full well that they were supporting Williams and wanted to see history.

“It’s an incredible moment for me. It’s like a dream. I’m in the finals … I beat Serena. Sorry guys,” Vinci said in an interview with ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi. “But for me, it’s an amazing moment. It’s incredible. It’s the best moment of my life.”

Vinci actually apologized to the fans and was asked again by Rinaldi about that.

“Yes (I apologized to the fans). For the American people, for Serena, for the Grand Slam … but today is my day,” Vinci said in an interview with ESPN’s Tom Rinaldi. “Sorry guys.”

Asked what gave her the belief that upsetting Serena was possible, Vinci waved off the question.

“I didn’t expect that I (would) win. No,” she said, dismissing the question and notion of potentially winning.

Vinci said she was most proud of herself for her fight; she rallied from down a set to win the last two, including breaking Serena to go up 5-3 in the final set.

Asked what she was most proud of, Vinci had a great response.

“Myself, my fight, my game.”
