Sloane Stephens blasts Serena Williams

Sloane StephensSloane Stephens absolutely obliterated Serena Williams in an interview with ESPN The Magazine, saying the two do not enjoy a close relationship and that she has been shunned by Williams ever since beating the veteran at the Australian Open.

In the interview, Stephens says her relationship with Williams has completely deteriorated since she defeated the decorated 31-year-old in the quarterfinals at the Aussie Open in January. She also says that Williams was not her favorite player growing up and nothing like a mentor to her, contrary to how the story has been told by the media.

The interview appears in the May 13 issue of the magazine. The excerpts below come from Beyond the Baseline.

“She’s not said one word to me, not spoken to me, not said hi, not looked my way, not been in the same room with me since I played her in Australia,” Stephens says. “And that should tell everyone something, how she went from saying all these nice things about me to unfollowing me on Twitter.”

Stephens’ mother reportedly tried to stop her from going on, but Stephens continued.

“Like, seriously! People should know. They think she’s so friendly and she’s so this and she’s so that — no, that’s not reality! You don’t unfollow someone on Twitter, delete them off of BlackBerry Messenger. I mean, what for? Why?”

Stephens also says that a cryptic tweet sent by Williams shortly after their Australian Open match was about her:

“I was like, ‘You really don’t think I know that that’s about me?’” Stephens tells the magazine, per Beyond the Baseline.

Stephens also dismisses the notion that Williams was her favorite player. She says Kim Clijsters became her favorite player after she was denied autographs from the Williams sisters.

In the interview, Stephens says she was in Delray Beach, Fla., at a Fed Cup event when she was 12 and had a poster she was hoping to have signed by Venus and Serena.

“I waited all day [for an autograph],” she explains. “They walked by three times and never signed our posters.”

Stephens says she hung the poster on her wall for a while but was devastated that she was unable to get it signed. That led to Clijsters becoming her favorite player.

Stephens also wanted to set the record straight about the supposed mentor-protege relationship she and Serena shared. That angle was blown out of proportion by the media in the lead up to their Australian Open match.

“For the first 16 years of my life, she said one word to me and was never involved in my tennis whatsoever,” says Stephens. “I really don’t think it’s that big of a deal that she’s not involved now. If you mentor someone, that means you speak to them, that means you help them, that means you know about their life, that means you care about them. Are any of those things true at this moment? No, so therefore…”

The theme of the article seems to be that America wants another Serena to take the torch from the aging star, but that she’s unlike Williams.

Stephens finally lashing out at Williams is not that much of a surprise. Prior to Stephens’ win over Williams at the Australian, tension brewed between them during a quarterfinal match at the Brisbane International. Stephens was shown on video saying it was “disrespectful” that Serena yelled “come on!” throughout the match, but she backed off those comments when pressed. Now we’re seeing that the tension existed all along.

Williams is aging while Stephens is emerging. It’s clear that Serena will not be ceding the top American woman’s spot gently, which is no surprise given how explosive she can get when she is angry.

This has the potential to become the best rivalry in American sports.

Below is a photo from Stephens’ photoshoot with ESPN The Magazine:

Well said you understand what I just read , that Serena has become her own monster.

  • ronnie dunn

Crabs in a barrel, Williams could have helped more and not kept up with a lie that she really mentored someone she didn’t, “character”

  • kennanjen@msn.com

Serena has shown over and over that she’s a terrible sport and the poster child for the ugly American. None of the players like her they are afraid of her!

  • ronnie dunn

That Serena is just as fake for lying and not being honest about mentoring someone she didn’t, that’s what I got from his statement.

  • ronnie dunn

But character doesn’t right, who wants to see an arrogant star, who’s lying about mentoring when she could have just come clean, Williams sat on her tennis hands and excepted credit for something she didn’t do .

  • ronnie dunn

Serena couldn’t be honest about not mentoring this young lady, how would you feel if someone did what Williams did, where’s the character clause here.

  • ronnie dunn

Same here, why do people kiss celebrity ass so well when they won’t even sign poster for them . Ha

  • ronnie dunn

Did you read the article, Serena took credit for mentoring , but Sloane says she didn’t, her mother is playing the house negro role of not being honest and you applaud Serena, still crabs in a barrel mentality.

  • ronnie dunn

Politics ain’t it something, LOL/ Next to money LOL

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2JXM6IWTBXREPZJ6LGPOIN3BS4 yahoo-2JXM6IWTBXREPZJ6LGPOIN3BS4

what? Get an education if you want people to take you seriously. Can you even read the article dumba$$?

  • ronnie dunn

Why should Serena keep a lie going about mentoring somebody she didn’t ?

  • dougx

A lot of this is the media running wild with anything they can get a hold of – the mentoring story. They have to fill in the time in a broadcast. The only other issue would be, why did Serena un-follow her on Twitter after she lost. That seems like poor sportsmanship.

  • Ndoctatus

Sloane moans her jealousy and envy of Serena Williams.

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_2JXM6IWTBXREPZJ6LGPOIN3BS4 yahoo-2JXM6IWTBXREPZJ6LGPOIN3BS4

hey dumba$$, read the article, the dumb bitch is saying Serena is “NOW” not a mentor or blah blah blah, not that she never has. Here’s the quote “Are any of those things true at this moment? No, so therefore…”, Sloane is being a dumba$$ hater, she has said she was a fan and she was her favorite but now she’s retracting that? “Stephens says she hung the poster on her wall for a while but was devastated that she was unable to get it signed. That led to Clijsters becoming her favorite player.” Then the bitch goes on to cry about being unfollowed by her on twitter. WTF is wrong with this girl?

  • Ndoctatus

You are the poster child of the loser and the hateful American.

  • http://www.facebook.com/linda.elum.7 Linda Elum

The article didn’t say that Serena was not a help to Sloan, just that it wasn’t as the MEDIA stated. Read critically to understand the underlining of the words. And do you really know that Sloane is being honest. What makes her a saint. She didn’t correct it before and Serena has not spoken on either of those statements.

  • http://www.facebook.com/linda.elum.7 Linda Elum

Do you know that as a fact?

  • Tessenei

Wat a cry baby! some1 should tell Sloane Stevens that a person’s got the right to choose who they want to b friends with. She obliviously wished she was a part of Serena’s circle n is bitter because she isn’t. My advice to Sloane is to concentrate on ur tennis n 4get about ur 15 mins of fame for beatn an injured Serena, we all know a fit Serena would av whooped ur ass with 1 hand tied behind her back. Another thing, I’ve NEVER heard Serena say she was ur mentor, that was just another ”media ” devised plot 2 gain ratns n u fell 4 it Sloane. Serena’s the greatest female player ever, she’s the only ”American” player whether man/woman that keeps ur flag flying in pro tennis, so instead of tryn to tear her down n allow urself to b manipulated by the media, b thankful that if it weren’t 4 Serena n Venus, women of African descent would still b gettn the shaft in pro tennis.

  • todj

Slaone didn’t sign my poster. She is a terrible person.

  • todj

Serena never said she mentored her. Also when signing autographs Serena signed many but at some point had to stop. So she is mad she didn’t get her poster signed when she was 12 years old. BooHoo.

  • todj

She never mistreated her. Sloan wanted more attention and didn’t get it. Serena isn’t her mom.

  • todj

So Serena should answer to every article written by the media. If the media made it up why is it Serena’s responsibility to correct what others write. Why didn’t Sloan correct it when 1st written. Blame the person who write the fake story not the subjects.

  • todj

It isn’t Serena’s responsibility to correct every story written. There are so many articles written and if you notice Serena tries to ignore most of the stuff written knowing it is bogus. Blame the character of the person writing the false article not the subject.

  • todj

Serena never took any credit. Someone wrote an article so blame that person. Did you ever hear Serena say I mentored her?

  • todj

She didn’t keep anything going and she didn’t write the article.

  • todj

You are so right. When Sloan cracks the top 10 and gets to a final then she can boast, until then keep your head down and do your job.

  • todj

Boo Hoo she didn’t sign my poster when I was 12 years old. So that’s mistreatment?

  • todj

Get some glasses. please, next you will be telling us Golf is a black sport because of VJ

  • todj

You saw that she un-unfollowed her, or are you taking Slaone’s word for it?

  • http://www.facebook.com/daphne.jones.7568 Daphne Jones

You forgot James Blake,Yannic Noah, Mashonda Washington, Shanna Rueben, and many more….

  • todj

Your a very hostile person and should get help. I just hope you don’t have any children because I fear they may be getting abused. Please I plead with you get some help before it is too late.

  • todj

Serena consoled and hugged Victoria Azarenka’s and Vera Zvonareva when they were distraught and crying. She has helped up players that fell and got hurt while playing against her. Everyone isn’t going to like you no matter who you are but many players like her and willingly admit it. You may not like her but that is your issue.

  • todj

You are so right. If not for Serena and Venus. Sloane may not even be where she is in tennis. Because of the abuse and racism that they endured over the years, things are easier for people like Sloane. This is why Sloane’s own mother tried to stop her from her childish, spoiled rant.

  • johnnydow

The Williams sisters showed who they really are a long time ago. Every once in awhile the phony, sweet, facade slips a little and you see it. They learned early on you have to be likeable to get the really big sponsor money. If you asked people to send in stories of the times a Williams sister was rude, nasty, and in their face the emails would shut down the website.

  • KJNCHESTER

The top 100 today. Tsonga and Blake are half white.

  • Dre

Sloane should be focusing on having as much help as she can get with her game, instead of making enemies with 2 of the greatest players in the history of the game. Now she’s going to be distracted dealing with the fallout of this as will Serena, who will just focus on her game. Her mother should have done more to stop her. Her game is collapsing fast, and the girls on the tour are going to simply take advantage of her vulnerability. There’s no way this can turn out to be anything but a huge, massive mistake. I’m not sure how she got to 16 in the world, but she better head back to college, cos I don’t see her making any impact on tennis.

  • LaniY

How do you know Sloan is being honest. Maybe you should be honest about your dislike of Serena. You don’t have to like to Serena to know that this young lady made a professional mistake talking to a reporter about a rival. That’s right a rival not a mentor. Mentor goes out the door when you play. When you are actively competing in tennis where it is you and an opponent it isn’t really easy to be friends with competitors. That’s why when the Williams sisters play each other they play the worst.

  • LaniY

Will someone find ronnie dunn a job. Do you even watch tennis. if you did you wouldn’t care about tearing down Serena with such verocity. Americans have no bench when Serena stops playing. Sloan Stephens needs to learn how to win and stop doing interviews. Tennis fans want winners. quit the whining.

  • Slim

All of u who are defending Serena are idiots & caught up in the media perception of stars. Serena is a arrogant self center sports star. Sloane did exactly what she should have did, she didn’t let the media control the situation. Serena never mentored her so why would she let that story go on like that. She never said I had nothing to do with her success or anything of that nature. Sloane never bragged about beating her, I’m sure she knew Serena was injured, her point was after the fact of her beating her she started doing all the childish things like deleting her from Twitter & Blackberry Messenger. Why would Serena do that immediately after if she isn’t a sore loser & self centered. She was never asking for Serena to be her mentor, she’s upset for the way the media wanting to make it like black people help each other & Serena is such a good person that she guided this person career, when she didn’t & u dummies bought rite into it. She did right by not listening to her mother & put it out there for the world to know the truth. She’d b stupid if she had the opportunity to tell the truth & didn’t. Letting someone who had absolutely nothing to do with your career take credit for what you’ve accomplished & Sloane is stupid, crazy & etc… You’ll are stupid. Zombies of the media perceptions!!!

  • jojo

Serena has never been nice person and I think her public persona is a lie.

  • Teatime

Instead of penning articles, Sloane should let her tennis do the talking. If she was winning, then the article would not smack of frustration and bitterness. MJ had to replace her w/Venus at the Fedcup because she (MJ and the team, even Lindsey) did not have confidence in Sloane after she lost a match she should have won. And now, she has another 1st round lost (Madrid).

  • Dre

This is not about Serena. Its about Sloane’s bitterness and weak mentality that shows she won’t make any real impact in her field. Serena built a secondary school in Kenya with her own money, which is helping to influence the lives of thousands of African children. That’s the type of niceness I prefer. Sloane never brought that up. I wonder why. Serena’s a true hero that does her talking on the court. She doesn’t have to be nice to Sloane. Sloane’s a big girl who has caved in under the pressure to be another Serena. This is down to the fact that she doesn’t have the mental capacity or talent to live up to expectations of her. Sloane unfortunately is a no hoper, and has seriously disappointed a lot of her fans. I wish her well, but she should disappear off the radar very soon.

  • Dre

If Sloane wasn’t such a weak phony, she’d have confronted Serena directly about the poster, the unfollowing, etc. If it bothered you that much, have a heart to heart instead of spouting rubbish at the media trying to throw the focus off her terrible results. Serena built a school in Kenya that is shaping thousands of lives. Venus has a Haiti foundation that is helping people in Haiti. Those are the kind of things that matter. Not signing a poster.

  • http://twitter.com/R8RBOB B.R.G

Since Serena is no longer a little girl, she is going to do the right thing and ignore Ms. Sloane Stephens. Sloane is young and frustrated. She didn’t get the boost that she thought she would get after beating Serena at the AO and now Serena have her between the cross-hairs. The only thing she can do is lash out to be noticed because her game is definitely not doing it so what else is left than to attack the queen. Serena is no.1 and being no.1 means that your opponent has to come to you. Serena can simply ignore Sloane and play her game.Sloane don’t want none of healthy Serena.

  • http://twitter.com/R8RBOB B.R.G

If anything Sloane should have taken the unfollowing on Twitter as a sign of “I got under her skin” that she is viewed as a threat. Instead she lashed out like the high school girl who just found out that her “friends” weren’t really her friends. This rant only shows that Sloane ain’t ready for the crown.

  • Christopher Butler

    Well Said #2

  • Christopher Butler

Robin well said, All Sloan had to do , was humble herself and allow her game(in future) to do the talking. Once she interject some sort of controversy between herself and Serena, then the distraction will deter her from accomplishing anything positive. We all know Serena is who she is, a fierce competitor, wears her emotions on her sleeve and speaks her mind. She didn’t get wear she is by being as passive as big sis. (not to take anything away from Venus)

  • Christopher Butler

Hey Ronnie who was more arrogant than Johnny Mc, and we embraced him, I don’t condone rude repulsive behavior , but we all know the straight up person Serena has been, her sis seems like a push over compared to her, some might agree that Venus is more gracious of the two. Whatever the spat between Sloan and her is about I am sure if they meet again Serena will rebutt with her racket.
