Bob Costas has made a decision regarding his play-by-play future.

Costas, who called games for MLB Network and TBS through the 2024 season, has decided to retire, according to Andrew Marchand of The Athletic. The 72-year-old made the decision prior to the start of the season, and it coincides with the expiration of his contract.

Costas will continue to host programs for MLB Network, but he will step away from his duties as the play-by-play announcer for the network’s weekly showcase games. He has called playoff games for TBS since the 2021 season.

Baseball fans probably will not be crushed to see Costas go. His call of the Yankees-Royals AL Division Series in 2024 was widely panned, and he has not even been all that popular before that, either.

Costas was still one of the last of the old-school baseball broadcasters on national duty, having called games at the national level in some form since 1982.
