The Toronto Blue Jays have roughly a month to sort out a new contract with Vladimir Guerrero Jr. While a new deal is no certainty, the Jays have shown no inclination to let him go, either.
The Blue Jays have shown no willingness to even discuss a Guerrero trade, according to Ken Rosenthal and Will Sammon of The Athletic. Toronto has suggested that it would take a package similar to what the New York Yankees gave up to get Juan Soto from San Diego to even think of trading Guerrero.
Guerrero and the Blue Jays have had preliminary contract talks, and those talks are expected to accelerate in the next few weeks. Guerrero has previously given Toronto a firm deadline to get a deal done before spring training gets underway.
Guerrero will become a free agent after the 2025 season, presenting the Blue Jays with a conundrum. They are clearly still trying to contend, but it is no certainty that they will be able to keep Guerrero on what will likely be a massive contract. For now, their plan seems to be to hold on to him no matter what.
The Blue Jays are trying to sign Guerrero as he is coming off one of his best seasons. The first baseman hit .323 with 30 home runs last year, and is in line for a huge deal, whether it is from Toronto or someone else.
