Could incorrect home run call cost Christian Yelich the Triple Crown?

Christian Yelich

Milwaukee Brewers outfielder Christian Yelich has one game left to play and is making a run at the Triple Crown, and there is a scenario in which his own team’s decision to not challenge a call could prevent him from accomplishing the rare feat.

Yelich entered Monday’s season finale with a National League-leading .323 batting average. His 109 RBI were two behind Chicago Cubs star Javier Baez and tied with Colorado Rockies third baseman Nolan Arenado, both of whom also had a game to play Monday. But what about the home run totals?

Going into the final game of the season, Yelich was tied for second in the NL with 36 home runs. Arenado, who again had one game remaining, led the league with 37. The problem is Yelich had also hit 37, only one of his long balls on May 4 was incorrectly called foul. The Brewers chose not to challenge the ruling.

There are several other players who have games Monday that also have 36 home runs and are near the league lead in RBI, so it’s possible the home run from May won’t factor in. However, there is a scenario in which the only thing that prevents Yelich from capturing the Triple Crown would be that homer he was cheated out of, which was a solo shot that also would have given him another RBI.

Boy, would that sting.
