Toronto’s most hated player is now off to a rival team.
Veteran MLB infielder Isiah Kiner-Falefa has signed with the Boston Red Sox in free agency, Jeff Passan of ESPN reported on Wednesday. Kiner-Falefa is getting a one-year contract from Boston, Passan adds.
The 30-year-old Kiner-Falefa is an eight-year MLB veteran who won a Gold Glove Award back in 2020. He split time last season between the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Toronto Blue Jays, batting .262 with two home runs, 40 RBIs, and 15 stolen bases through 138 games played overall.
With the Blue Jays in particular, Kiner-Falefa became a very notorious figure. That is because he committed a major baserunning blunder in Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. Kiner-Falefa infamously failed to take a big enough lead from third base while representing the winning run in the bottom of the ninth.
Blue Jays fans were all over Kiner-Falefa for supposedly costing them a World Series victory. Others though were a bit more understanding and insisted that Kiner-Falefa did nothing wrong on the play.
In any case though, the righty-hitting Kiner-Falefa is now headed to an AL East division rival in the Red Sox. He has the ability to play at third base, second base, or shortstop and adds to what has been a very busy offseason in Boston (headlined by a big trade for a three-time All-Star hitter).
