John Gibbons acknowledges he may not be interested in rebuild

John Gibbons

John Gibbons acknowledged that he may not be interested in going through a rebuild with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Gibbons’ status as Toronto’s future manager has been in question since The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reported that this could be the manager’s final season with the Jays. The 56-year-old manager said twice on Friday that he was wary of going through a rebuild.

First, Gibbons made the comments on MLB Network Radio, saying that a fresh face might be best for the young players to grow with.

Gibbons later said the same to Blue Jays reporters.

“Truthfully, a full breakdown, going young, you know, I have to admit — I don’t know if I’m interested in that,” Gibbons said via MLB.com’s Gregor Chisholm. “But we’ll see. I’m still here. I’ve enjoyed every minute of it. Everybody has been great to me, no doubt about that. We’ll see where it all ends up.”

Gibbons is in the sixth season of his second stint as the Jays’ manager. He is signed through 2019.
