Report: Mike Scioscia to step down after season

Mike Scioscia Angels

The Los Angeles Angels are in for a major change.

Longtime manager Mike Scioscia is expected to step down after the season, according to The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal. Scioscia’s 10-year contract with the Angels is expiring after the season, and Rosenthal says the manager is not expected to pursue a new deal with the team.

Interestingly, Rosenthal says Scioscia’s decision to step down is not due to pressure from the club. It seems that Scioscia may believe it’s time for a change.

It’s unknown whether the 59-year-old would have interest in managing again.

The Angels have seemingly been working towards hiring a new manager. New GM Billy Eppler has two special assistants who seem like potential successors — Brad Ausmus and Eric Chavez. The team has also brought in several assistant coaches who Rosenthal says do not have ties to Scioscia.

Scioscia has been the Angels’ manager since 2000. He won a World Series in 2002, which brought him more than a decade of goodwill. He has been the Angels’ only manager since owner Arte Moreno bought the team. The team has gone 1625-1402 (.537) in his tenure. Though the team had tremendous success during the 2000s, they have fallen off since and only made the playoffs once since 2010. It seems that it is finally time for a leadership change with the Angels, so a parting of ways would make plenty of sense.
