Pirates’ head-scratching blunder leads to easiest steal of home

Rockies' Ryan McMahon steals home against the Pirates

Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon basically walked into a steal of home plate Saturday against the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Rockies led the Pirates 5-1 with two outs in the bottom of the 5th at Coors Field in Denver, Colo.

Rockies left fielder Nolan Jones was at the plate with McMahon standing at third base. Pirates pitcher Jared Jones threw an 84 mph slider for a ball to bring the count to 2-2. Pirates catcher Yasmani Grandal very casually threw the ball back toward the mound. McMahon took advantage.

Grandal threw that baseball back as if he were a dad playing catch with his young son at the park.

McMahon was gifted such an easy steal of home plate that Jared Jones didn’t even attempt a throw back to Grandal. Instead, the Pirates pitcher simply looked away in disgust.

Jones missed badly on his next two pitches and gave up a 2-out walk. The Pirates starter was pulled before the next batter with his team down 6-1.
