SF Giants bring back former All-Star outfielder as executive

The San Francisco Giants continue to load up their front office with alums.

The Giants announced Thursday that they have named retired ex-outfielder Randy Winn as their new vice president of player development. Winn will be serving under Giants president of baseball operations Buster Posey.

Now 50 years old, Winn was an All-Star with the then-Tampa Bay Devil Rays in 2002 and then went on to play for the Giants from 2005-09. Winn also recently returned to the Giants in 2021 as a team color commentator.

With Posey, himself a seven-time All-Star and three-time World Series champion with the Giants, now in charge of the front office, San Francisco has quite the who’s who of former players in management roles. Will Clark and Barry Bonds (whose role with the Giants recently got bigger) have been serving as special assistants, and Pat Burrell (hitting coach), Matt Williams (third base coach), and Ellis Burks (scout) are among the other ex-Giants players who are still around.

Now Winn is set to join the party as well. On top of that, the Giants also recently hired a new GM who, though he is not a former player, still has a well-known name.
