Stephen Strasburg made glove tweak to prevent tipping pitches to Astros

Stephen Strasburg

Stephen Strasburg made a huge in-game adjustment during his start in Game 6 of the World Series on Tuesday night that helped his Washington Nationals win the game, and it was thanks to one of the team’s coaches.

Strasburg allowed two runs in the first inning of the game, including a monster home run to Alex Bregman. Nationals pitching coach Paul Menhart realized that Strasburg was tipping his pitches with his glove, which allowed the Astros to know what was coming.

So what adjustment did Strasburg make? He told FOX reporter Tom Verducci after the game.

“Started shaking my glove so they didn’t know what I was throwing. Obviously they look for certain things. I just thank (pitching coach Paul) Menhart for giving me the tip,” Strasburg said.

“I definitely didn’t,” Strasburg said when asked if he knew that he was tipping. “It’s something that has burned me in the past and it burned me in the first. It’s part of the game.”

The Astros have developed a reputation for being incredible at spotting when opposing pitchers tip their pitches. They have done it multiple times throughout the postseason, including in Game 6. But as soon as Strasburg made the adjustment, Houston was shut down and failed to score any more runs.
