Report: Yankees expected to pursue Gerrit Cole in free agency

Gerrit Cole

Gerrit Cole will be a highly sought after pitcher in free agency this offseason, and the New York Yankees are expected to be involved in the bidding, according to a report.

SNY’s Andy Martino reported on Wednesday night that the Yankees are expected to engage on Cole and are more likely to be interested in the pitcher more than Anthony Rendon, who will be a top position player on the market.

Though the Yankees will likely have interest in Cole, that does not mean they are favorites to sign him by any means. It’s unclear what the Yankees’ budget will be this offseason and whether Cole would prefer them. Cole grew up a Yankees fan and had an affinity for the Angels. He is expected to prefer a West Coast team.

Cole, 29, originally was drafted by the Yankees out of high school in 2008 but chose to attend UCLA instead, where he developed into the No. 1 overall pick. Cole has lived up to the billing so far. He has made three All-Star teams and led the league with a 2.50 ERA and 326 strikeouts this season. The Astros’ owner has already expressed reservations about whether Houston will be able to re-sign Cole.
