Spencer Dinwiddie to play for Nigeria in Olympics after not getting Team USA invite
Spencer Dinwiddie is taking his talents elsewhere on the international stage after not making the cut for the United States.
Shams Charania of The Athletic reported on Saturday that the Brooklyn Nets guard will acquire a passport to play for Nigeria in the Olympics after not receiving an invite from Team USA. Dinwiddie will join a Nigerian team that already includes current NBA talents like Al-Farouq Aminu, Josh Okogie, and Chimezie Metu as well as former ones like Ekpe Udoh.
The 27-year-old Dinwiddie, who is averaging 20.6 points and 6.8 assists per game this season, previously played for Team USA at the 2013 Summer Universiade in Kazan, Russia. While the others named are of Nigerian descent, Dinwiddie appears to be joining the team as a naturalized player.
Though an excellent talent in his own right, Dinwiddie was not among the 44 finalists for the US Olympic team announced in February. He did however have a bit of beef recently with one of the players who was a finalist.
