Celtics fans already taunting Mavericks star after clinching Finals berth

Celtics fans gathered in the street after the team clinched their 2024 NBA Finals berth

Boston Celtics fans don’t exactly have the best history with Kyrie Irving. That was evident Monday after the team clinched its second NBA Finals appearance over the last three seasons.

The Celtics eliminated the Indiana Pacers in a 105-102 Game 4 performance to complete an Eastern Conference Finals sweep at Gainbridge Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind.

Several Celtics fans took to the streets in Boston to celebrate their team making the NBA Finals. A two-word chant broke out lampooning Irving, whose Dallas Mavericks are a win away from making the Finals themselves.

“F–k Kyrie! F–k Kyrie!” Celtics fans chanted.

Irving spent two seasons in Boston from 2017 to 2019. Before leaving for the Brooklyn Nets in 2019, the 8-time All-Star infamously told Celtics fans he wanted to stay long enough to have his jersey retired in the TD Garden rafters.

Irving has had several run-ins with Celtics fans over the years. Celtics fans probably still remember Irving disrespecting the team logo when Boston and Brooklyn faced off during the 2021 NBA playoffs. Irving also once compared Celtics fans to a scorned ex-girlfriend.

Irving’s return to Boston, barring a miraculous comeback from the Minnesota Timberwolves, would likely be one of the biggest storylines of the 2024 NBA Finals.
