Joel Embiid frustrated with role on Sixers

Joel Embiid 76ers

Joel Embiid sat out the Philadelphia 76ers’ 117-111 win over the Detroit Pistons on Friday night and expressed frustration over his role with the team.

The Sixers have gone 9-3 since acquiring Jimmy Butler in a trade and are now 18-9. The move has paid off, but it’s left Embiid trying to figure out his role in the offense. In comments to Philly.com’s Keith Pompey, Embiid said he’s used for spacing now, and that has him frustrated.

“Since the trade, it’s been really down,” Embiid told Pompey of his success ratio. “I tend to get triple-teamed a lot. I was in the flow of the offense. I feel like I’m not any more. There’s not a lot of possessions on the block. I don’t know. We got to figure it out.”

Embiid had three straight poor shooting games and averaged fewer than 14 points per game in those contests. He was 0-for-6 on threes in his last two games.

There was always a question about the fit when Philly brought in a strong personality like Butler to team with a big personality like Embiid, and clearly things have not been figured out yet on Embiid’s end. Butler has been great though and scored 38 points in the team’s win over Detroit.

Even if Embiid is figuring out his way, at least Philly is winning.
