Lonzo Ball has minor MCL sprain; Lakers will not rush return

Lonzo Ball

The left knee injury that has sidelined Lonzo Ball for the last two weeks is an MCL sprain, and while he’s getting closer to a return, he’s not there yet.

The Los Angeles Lakers guard suffered what is being called a minor MCL sprain on Jan. 13 and has not played since. The typical recovery time is three weeks, but coach Luke Walton said the team won’t rush Ball back any faster than they have to.

“He’s feeling better every day,” Walton said, via Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN. “I wouldn’t be surprised if within a couple of days, a week, whatever it is, they say he’s ready to start practicing again. But we are still training and approaching it as if it’s long term. We are not making any plans as if he’s coming back tomorrow.

“He will be back when he is ready to play. When that is, I can’t tell you — whenever his knee feels good. … We are not going to rush him back. Once he gets cleared, it will be about getting him back to practice and then seeing how he feels after that.”

Ball sounds fairly close, perhaps within another week or two. In the interim, he can use his downtime to get some rehearsals in for his rap concert next summer.
